Getting to Know the Action Camera

An action camera is a light-weight, durable camera designed to mount on helmets, surfboards and poles to get a point of view shot of the action. This type of camera is typically designed to capture high-quality footage in a wide variety of rugged environments. Most cameras in this category have a wide field of view, which can range from 140 degrees to 170 degrees.

As you get more familiar with this type of device, you may want to figure out how to take high-quality, professional-looking videos. Part of your POV action video camera rentals can be experimenting with different shooting techniques, such as:

    • Changing the mount. Action cameras, such as the GoPro, have a lot of mounts available. You can use a pole to hold it yourself, wear a chest mount or put a mount right on your helmet. Using a pole allows you to change your view with ease. You can easily switch from views of the action to views of yourself.
    • Choose a narrower option. As you set up your field of view, you may have a few different options. Choosing a narrower field of view will help close in on the action. Depending on what you're trying to shoot you may get a fisheye look if your field of view is too wide. The option you choose will, of course, depend on the video you are trying to capture.
    • Focus on your angle. Action video is different than a typical video. This footage is supposed to show what the subject is doing, which means seeing the face may not always be important. When you set up your angle, you want to be sure the action will be in the frame.
