What Is a Normal Lens?
Normal lenses tend to mimic what the human eye would see. On a camera, the normal lens is typically the standard focal length. This means that the normal lens will differ based on the camera you are using. In order to figure out the normal focal length, you have to look at the diagonal of the sensor of the camera. For example, a DSLR with a sensor of 36 millimeters by 24 millimeters would have a normal lens of 43.27 millimeters. Most normal lenses in this case would round up to about 50 millimeters.
The focal length of a lens is important when looking at the depth of field. Depth of field refers to the sharpness of the foreground and background of the actual subject of the shot. You may want to rent standard lens if you are interested in creating a video as the human eye may see it.
A normal lens is between a telephoto lens and a wide-angle lens. A telephoto lens zooms in on the subject and typically takes close-up shots while a wide-angle lens gets wider shots. The benefit of the normal lens is that the subject usually remains undistorted at an average distance as does the background of the image.
