Overview

The Sony a7R IV combines many of the stellar features of the various a7 series cameras into 1 powerful multimedia machine. It beats the already-high resolution sensor of its predecessor by offering an astounding 61 megapixels. It maintains the same loved features of the prior model, such as super-flexible ISO range and 5-axis sensor-shift image stabilization, and introduces some notable new features:

Getting the Most Out of a Sensor

Sony aims to offer the same imaging power found in medium format cameras but in a portable package. It's the first to offer such a high megapixel sensor in this form factor. The sensor has been developed with a back-illuminated design, offering high sensitivity without increasing noise. This Exmor R BSI CMOS sensor is supported by an enhanced BIONZ X image processor, which allows you to shoot with 15 stops of dynamic range. Use real-time Eye AF and Tracking AF technologies up to 10 FPS or while shooting UHD 4K all with more phase-detection AF points for notably faster and more accurate focusing. For those seeking the ultimate in detail, Pixel Shift Multi Shooting has been renewed to support compositing 16 images for 240.8MP results, all with the true-to-life detail, texture, and color this new system excels at.

Fastest Camera in Its Class

It's difficult to get both extremely high resolution and speed but the a7R IV offers both. Take advantage of a shooting speed of 10 FPS with the redesigned mechanical shutter. Crop down from full frame to APS-C and still enjoy 26.2MP imagery! This, coupled with the wide AF point coverage, the enhanced AF tracking, and dual UHS-II SD card slots that can handle high volume, makes the a7R IV the ideal camera for not only portraits and still life but also wildlife, sports, and events.

New Design Features

Several practical small changes can be found in the a7R IV. Gain better manual control over your AF points with a refined multi-selector, which has a new shape and texture. Sharpness settings in the Creative Style function have been increased from +/-3 to 5. A number of small customization and menu enhancements have been made, including a Save/Load Settings function that allows you to save camera settings in an SD card to load into other a7 cameras. The menu interface overall has improved. The shutter has been reworked to include a brake that subdues mechanical front and rear curtain vibration. It's also quieter, though Silent Shooting is still an option. There is a new OLED viewfinder with a "High Quality" mode that gives you extra fine details with minimal moir. When shooting moving subjects, you can use the 120 FPS setting to minimize display motion blur. The grip is deeper for a better hold when using heavier lenses.

Video Workflows for Pros and Novices

While amateurs will enjoy the a7R IV's intuitive Touch Tracking, Fast Hybrid AF, and Eye AF for movies, there are plenty of features designed with pros in mind. The multi-interface hot shoe now works as a digital audio interface and allows direct connection to new devices, like the digital ECM-B1M Shotgun Microphone or XLR-K3M XLR Adapter Kit (not included). This gives you an additional audio option to the 3.5mm microphone port. As with the a7R III, this camera is equipped with internal 4K shooting and S-Log2, S-Log3, and Hybrid Log-Gamma. You can capture 4K movies in Super 35mm mode without binning, condensing the amount of data required for 4K by about 2.4 times. Easily identify your movie files with assignable XAVC S file prefixes. Focus Peaking also has been greatly improved, with a blue color added to the existing red, yellow, and white choices.

The a7R IV has continued the a7-series' tradition of being an all-around, go-to camera with pro-style options. It is ideal for portrait, lifestyle, and commercial photographers but it is also an amazing tool for travelers, multimedia creatives, documentarians, or shooters who just like to do a little of everything with high resolution results.
