Overview

The Nikon Z8 shares a lot of the specs of the flagship Z9 but in a much more compact form factor to accomodate gimbal use. Here are some of the top features this hybrid system:

  • A powerful processing engine that is 10x faster than the Z7 II for effortless continuous shooting speeds up to 120 FPS at 11MP or 20 FPS at full resolution. Supporting this is a huge 1,000-image buffer capacity (when shooting high-efficiency raw at 20 FPS).
  • A Pre-Release Capture feature that will retain up to a second's worth of frames prior to fully pressing the shutter, taking the edge off shooting during very decisive moments by providing a just-in-case burst ahead of the main shot.
  • Minimal rolling shutter distortion thanks to a full electronic shutter system and stacked sensor design, with support for speeds up to 1/32,000th of a second.
  • Introduced in the Z9, the Z8 also has a "deep learning" subject detection system for 3D tracking, plus a Startlight Mode for focusing all the way down to -8.5 EV.
  • The Z8 also borrows the Z9's video chops with 8K recording with full pixel readout. Enjoy 10-bit color and 4:2:2 sampling in ProRes 422 HQ and H.265 codecs. For post production, there is a 10-bit N-Log setting as well as a Flat color profile. Grab 33MP stills from your 8K footage or take advantage of dynamic slow motion at 120 FPS in 4K. UHD 8K30p can be recorded continuously for approximately 2 hours 5 minutes.
  • Features made especially for portraiture, like in-camera hue and brightness fine-tining and skin-softening. This camera has been dubbed a mirrorless successor of the D850 DSLR.

With a flagship-worthy AF system, dual card slots (CFexpress type B and UHS-II SD), in-body vibration reduction (up to 6 stops), good connectivity (full size HDMI), and premium weather sealing, the Z8 is an ideal choice for hybrid shooters.
