Overview

Important announcements about this upgraded version of the Z7:

This camera must be connected to a compatible Atomos external capture device to export ProRes Raw footage. You will also need a 4K HDMI 2.0 cable and (at the time of this writing) Final Cut Pro. Currently, this upgrade is only compatible with the following recording monitors: Ninja V, Ninja V+, Shogun Inferno 7, Sumo 19. Outputting footage over HDMI requires that you disable Power Off Delay. To do this: Custom Setting Menu > Timers/AE Lock > Power Off Delay > Set to "No Limit".

The Nikon Z7 ProRes Raw is exactly like the Nikon Z7 but this upgraded version allows you to output 12-bit 4K UHD or Full HD Raw via a 4K HDMI 2.0 cable (cable not included) to a compatible Atomos external capture device. On this camera, you'll need to go into the menu settings under HDMI Advanced and select Raw Output Options. This will disable any internal recording so make sure your compatible Atomos device is ready to capture! ProRes Raw combined with the Z7's high dynamic range will give you footage with the fullest spectrum of color. It is ideal for HDR content. Maintain incredible latitude at lower ISOs. ProRes Raw files also deliver a smaller footprint and are easier to handle in post processing than standard Raw formats.

Here are the other standout features that make the ProRes Raw version of the Z7 a powerful mirrorless system:

An Innovative Z Mount

At the heart of this new system is a large diameter mount that allows for new Z mount lenses to be equipped with large, light-gathering rear elements and ultra-fast apertures. This is coupled with the Z7's reduced flange distance (the distance between a lens' mount and the surface of the sensor) from 46.5mm in the F system to a mere 16mm. Though this large Z mount is designed specifically for Nikon's new line of ultra-fast Z lenses, it can still be paired with an optional adapter for use with most of Nikon's F mount lenses. They maintain their sharpness, resolving power, and functionality while getting to take advantage of the Z7's large 46MP sensor.

Wide Sensor Sensitivity and Advanced AF System

The backside-illuminated CMOS sensor has built-in focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels. This, coupled with the latest image processing engine, allows you to use 493 AF points that cover 90% of the frame in a hybrid system that is specially optimized for full frame sensors. The Z7 can switch between contrast and phase detection depending on the shooting environment when recording footage. This, along with Nikon's Auto Area AF subject tracking feature, produces easy, natural-looking focus transitions when shooting video. Each lens in the Nikon Z line is also optimized for silent operation. Control exactly when autofocus starts and stops in AF-C mode using sensitive AF speed and tracking options handy for both video and still shooters for events.

Rounding this out is a 9 FPS shooting speed, a wide 32-102,400 (expanded) ISO range, and overall reduced noise compared to other Nikon models. This is all supported by a major first for Nikon: in-body image stabilization that compensates for movement up to 5 stops along 5 axes. This feature can be stacked with VR-equipped lenses or used to provide VR for the first time to F mount lenses without any native stabilization (when paired with the optional adapter).

UHD 4K Video with Nikon Log

Experience UHD 4K video without any cropping. The backside-illuminated sensor is used in its entirety when shooting video and provides the option of shooting 5K equivalent footage in crop mode. Shoot in Nikon's N-Log, which enables the capturing of flat footage with 1,300% improved dynamic range (12 stops). This gives editors the most latitude to work with in post production and provides ultimate creative control when color grading. Send your uncompressed 12-bit files to an external recorder (see Notes for more on compatible recorders) via HDMI.

Further enhancing the Z7 for video is a touch-to-focus feature on the large 3.2" tilting LCD, making focus transitions between subjects fast and easy. Blending the photo and video worlds, the Z7's convenient built-in interval timer can capture nearly 10,000 full resolution stills to be combined into an 8K movie using appropriate software. 4K time lapses can be assembled in-camera.

Big Build Benefits in a Small Form Factor

Nikon borrowed the best of the D850's layout and incorporated a deep grip to make handling a smaller form factor comfortable and well-balanced, even with Nikon's longer lenses. It is built from the same materials as the flagship D5 for incredible durability and it is extensively sealed against dust and moisture all this while still being 26% lighter than the D850.

Composing the shot has never been easier with Nikon's ultra-high resolution EVF that exhibits almost no lag despite its nearly 100% frame coverage. It is designed to feel like an optical viewfinder without sacrificing any of the electronic benefits. See your menus right in the viewfinder, preview your exposure in real time, and review both stills and footage all without taking your eye off the camera. The large touchscreen LCD can be used like a smartphone: touch to focus, pinch to zoom, tap to fire the shutter, swipe through images, and navigate settings in a flash. Nikon's menus overall have been upgraded for more intuitive navigation. Add your favorite functions to see quickly in the EVF or on the LCD.

The sleek design of the Z7 matches the new line of Z mount lenses. The lenses are made to be a fluid extension of the camera. A customizable control ring on each new lens' barrel can be programmed for manual focusing (default setting), aperture control, or exposure compensation. The Z7 has been built for the future and can be paired with forthcoming lenses with maximum apertures as fast as f/0.95.

The Nikon Z7 ProRes Raw Upgraded Mirrorless camera provides incredible possibilities with its light-gathering prowess in a form factor that's both beautiful and practical. It is a unique production tool that is ideal for documentaries, corporate events, narratives, and multimedia work.
