Overview

The Canon Speedlite EL-1 Flash represents the next generation of all-purpose flashes with a new and convenient Lithium-Ion battery, incredible exposure range, and much improved menu, controls, and build. Here are the top features of this versatile lighting system:

  • Long-lasting battery provides up to 2,345 flash pops and 3 hours of LED modeling lamp runtime (settings dependent).
  • Much faster recycling times compared to prior models, with 0.1-0.9 seconds between firings.
  • Active cooling system to allow for much longer continuous shooting times.
  • Ultra wide 14-stop exposure range of 1/1 to 1/8192 and a coverage range of 24-200mm to accommodate extremely popular lens focal lengths, such as the 24-105mm and the 70-200mm.
  • A much better button/dial layout with an intuitive joystick and a revamped menu system.
  • Equipped with radio transmission capabilities.
  • Weather resistant build that matches the sealing performance of Canon's 1D series of cameras.

While heftier than your average Speedlite, the Canon Speedlite EL-1 Flash is really more like a small strobe. With its rugged design, fast recycle times, and versatile conversion as a continuous light source thanks to a tunable LED lamp, this is a Speedlite you can use everywhere out in bad weather, in a professional studio, and at large events. It is ideal for hybrid shooters who primarily shoot stills but who may need the LED for some video footage.

  • This flash is not equipped with a remote release terminal and the SR-N3 is not compatible.
  • This flash is not recommended when using the Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye or Canon EF 8-15mm Fisheye.
  • High continuous shooting in stroboscopic mode of 30+ frames may trip a safety function. When this happens, you must rest the flash for 10-50 minutes. Continuous firing in any mode may result in a gradual increase in recycle time (up to 20 seconds in worst-case scenario) to protect the flash from overheating. This is normal. Rapid flash firing will make the flash warm to the touch, so practice caution. Recycle times of 4-8 seconds are a good indication the flash should recharge and rest.
  • Canon DSLRs released before 2011 are not recommended for use with this flash, as many of the options will be disabled.
