The Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III offers an upgrade in optics, build and handling compared to prior models. Here are some of the key features of this super telephoto prime lens:
World's Lightest 600mm
At the time of this writing, Canon has created the world's most lightweight 600mm lens. They achieved this by improving optical placement so that the center of gravity is toward the rear of the lens, improving shooter comfort and positioning. More compact Super UD lenses were installed, as was a lighter Image Stabilization unit. This lens is 20% lighter than the Canon 600m f/4L IS II without sacrificing key features, like a reliable rotating tripod foot and convenient rear drop-in style filter.
Equipped for Harsh Environments
Dust and water-resistant construction, along with seals around the mount, switches, and rings, allows you to shoot with this lens for long hours in a variety of conditions. A special coating was applied to the front and rear elements to prevent water, oil, and residue from sticking. A new paint formula has been used on this lens to reflect more heat while the two-barrel construction reduces thermal effects on the lens elements. This is ideal for photographers spending long hours outdoors or on safari.
L-Series Quality and Control
As part of Canon's esteemed L-series line of lenses, the Canon 600mm f/4 IS III produces images with vibrant, accurate colors with deep contrast thanks to Super Spectra Coatings that help maintain color fidelity and overall image quality. A special Air Sphere Coating minimizes ghosting, reflections, and flare. The customizable electronic focusing ring features 3 sensitivity levels. You can also choose two distinct focus distances and swap between them by twisting the Recall Ring at the center of the lens. This is a great option for fixed-position sports shooting. Supporting this is an Optical Image Stabilization system that provides shake reduction for up to 5 stops in low light. There are 3 stabilization modes, including one that allows you to pan with fast-moving subjects without compositional interference from the IS. An AF Stop button will pause autofocus and allow for manual focus override. You have full control over what you're focusing on with this lens, even while shooting video thanks to a Power Focus mode which produces a very smooth transition between focus/out-of-focus. Lastly, this lens has an improved minimum focusing distance (13.8' vs the prior's 14.76').
All of these features make the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS III lens a great choice for wildlife, aviation, sports, ceremony events, and safaris. Its near-silent operation also makes it a suitable option for video.
