Overview

This version of the 5D Mark IV comes with Canon Log for filmmakers. If you don't need this feature, please see the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. To use Canon Log, it must be turned on under the Canon Log Settings menu and ISO should be set to 400 (though lower ISOs can still be used). Then, you will be able to use the View Assist function with 1 of 2 LUTs for a representation of grading.

The Canon 5D Mark IV with Canon Log allows you to record 4K and HD files with expanded dynamic range and wider exposure latitudes for easier color matching with other Canon cameras and camcorders with greater control over grading in post-production. 4K and HD video files exhibit suppressed contrast and sharpness and increased dynamic range of up to 800%, or 12 stops (at ISO 400 or above), which gives you more detail in the highlights and shadows and creative control over saturation and tone. To see your changes, View Assist will show on the Lcd how an image will look with these custom settings. This Log feature includes 2 LUTs (Canon Log 10 to Wide DR LUT and Canon Log 10 to ITU-R BT.709 LUT) that correct your footage's gamma and color space when viewed on an external monitor (rentable separately). This addition to the 5D Mark IV makes it a more versatile multimedia tool.

The 5D Mark IV itself improves on the 5D Mark III with a boost in megapixels, ISO, shooting speed, a touchscreen Lcd, built-in WiFi, and, most notably, with 4K video and Dual Pixel CMOS AF. Movie Servo AF and Dual Pixel CMOS AF provide very smooth rack focusing abilities directly from the touchscreen Lcd. You can record DCI 4K at up to 30 FPS while also snagging 8.8MP stills from your footage.

Video and still shooters alike will enjoy a newly-designed body that includes better weather resistance, a front-facing remote port, better ergonomics, and built-in GPS and WiFi without the need for external adapters. These features are rounded out by the continuation of the dual memory card slots (1 CF, 1 SD, cards not included) and ports for a microphone and headphones. The 5D Mark IV is a powerhouse suitable for just about every kind of shooter but this Canon Log version is designed with videographers in mind.

Special Note from Canon about Noise Issues:

When Canon Log is set, horizontal noise stripes may appear in movies depending on subject or shooting conditions. It is recommended to shoot a few test movies and check before the actual shooting. Note that noise may become more noticeable especially when you apply strong contrast during color grading of the shot movie. Horizontal noise stripes tend to appear when the subject is dark and flat or [Peripheral illum.] is set to [Enable]. This noise may also appear when ISO speed is relatively low, such as at ISO 400. When the noise is noticeable, it is recommended to set [Peripheral illum.] to [Disable], shoot in brighter exposure, and perform brightness adjustment during color grading. Also, noise may be decreased when you shoot at ISO speed lower than ISO 400 (even though the dynamic range will be narrowed).
