Atomos Gives Filmmakers Access to the Full Potential of their Cameras

With over a decade of producing high-quality monitor recorders, Atomos has paved the way for better workflows by allowing consumers to capture the uncompressed output from their cameras and store it in Apple ProRes. This dramatically improves the video coming out of almost any camera so that filmmakers can get the most out of their investments.

From simpler monitors to the brightest-screen recorders that can take on 8K, Atomos has carved its way into filmmaking vocabulary and BorrowLenses has followed that lead by offering a wide variety of Atomos products for rent. Whether you need an Atomos system for just 1 project or you're testing out Atomos units to possibly purchase in the future, BL is a great way to get your hands on one of these essential on-set tools without breaking the bank.

Touchscreen Monitors that Save Video to Removable Drives

The concept is simple, but the impact is huge. You can use a monitor recorder for just about any application, from small personal projects to fully-financed narratives. While Atomos has a whole fleet of different products, we're going to focus on 3 of their main lines: the Ninja, the Shogun, and the Sumo. Let's take a look at the most rentals:

Ninja V+
This is the world's first monitor recorder to be able to capture 8K30p ProRes raw to mini-SSDs or standard 2.5" SSD from a variety of cameras, including the Sony FX6, the Canon R5, the Fuji GFX 100S, and the Panasonic S1H, to name just a few. It's also equipped with on-screen exposure analysis, framing, anamorphic de-squeeze, and focus assist tools.

Shogun 7 HDR Pro
The Shogun will capture Apple ProRes raw up to 5.7K. You can also monitor, record, and switch between 4 live 1080p60 video streams while cueing in real time while also displaying the mixed output over HDMI or SDI right on set! This is a great option for performances.

Sumo 19SE
Our biggest monitor in the fleet, the Sumo is nearly 20" (diagonally) and weighs a whopping 12.3 lbs. This is not a monitor for run-and-gun. What it is great for, though, is bridging your 6K workflow across multiple cameras, audio, and other Atomos devices. Enjoy 2 full-sized XLR connections with 48V phantom power to connect 2 microphones for balanced analogue audio while monitoring and recording. Its large size lends well to the quad view live switching while recording up to four 4K60p streams at once.

What is ProRes Raw and Why is it Such a Big Deal?

ProRes gives you the speed of a smaller, more compressed codec without giving up the flexibility of raw so that you can get higher resolutions, faster frame rates, and with increased bit-depths – all while producing small, edit-friendly files. Yes, it's kind of magic! Atomos uses this codec to bridge the gap between the evolving sensor sizes of new cameras and the internal recording limitations some of those cameras exhibit. Give yourself the flexibility on set you deserve with an Atomos monitor recorder!
