The Best Sony Cameras and Lenses

Sony is dominating the mirrorless platform with cameras that specialize in speed, resolution, and – most notably – light sensitivity.

E mount lenses were once a limiting factor with only a few models to choose from, but in the past few years that has changed with a steady stream of releases that stack up admirably next to Canon and Nikon counterparts.

The Benefits of Renting Sony Gear from BL

There are rentals for a lot of things, from power tools to purses, but you might not realize just how useful renting Sony equipment is. For one, buying the gear you want for each of the types of gigs you do can get very expensive – prohibitively so for the hobbyist. But that doesn't mean you should go without trying the latest tech! Here are just a few of the benefits of renting:

Convenience When Traveling
Leave your personal gear at home and eliminate the risk of it getting broken or stolen.

Special Occasions
Photographing air shows once a year is the perfect use case for renting vs shelling out upwards of 10K on a super telephoto lens!

Gain Experience
Don't learn on the job study a piece of gear ahead of time! Rent a camera or lighting kit and get hands-on with it before jumping into a major event assistants, take note!

Low-Cost Testing
Not sure if you want to upgrade or if some certain new shiny system will work with your current accessories? Instead of using credit to purchase something expensive and relying too much on a decent returns policy, why not just borrow the item for as little as dollars a day?

Reserve your gear, have it shipped directly to you, and use the prepaid return label after you're done.

BL carries not only Sony gear but also popular brands like Canon, Nikon, Blackmagic, Fuji, Panasonic, and GoPro. We also have an expanding inventory from brands like Rokinon, Venus Optics, DZOFILM, and more.

What to Look for in a Sony Lens

The BorrowLenses crew are all working professionals and passionate hobbyists themselves. BL gear experts are here to help you, whether it’s troubleshooting equipment compatibility or making adjustments to your reservation.

When shopping around for Sony lenses – whether to purchase or just to rent – here are some things to know to help you make an informed decision:

Gold Master Series
If you see "GM" in the lens title, that means it’s part of Sony’s G Master series. These are designed for full frame cameras, like the a7 series, but mount perfectly well to a6000 series cameras. They support high resolution sensors and feature beautiful bokeh, superior handling, and leading technology for the fastest, most precise autofocus. They are also expensive and make perfect rentals.

Gold Series
A predecessor to G Master. High-grade lenses with fast maximum apertures.

Optical SteadyShot
When you see "OSS" in a lens title, you’ll know it comes with image stabilization.

Power Zoom
Sometimes you’ll see "PZ" in a Sony lens title. On these lenses, there is the option to activate zoom using a rocker switch instead of just zooming by hand with a control ring. This can provide much smoother results when shooting video. Its technology is borrowed from Sony’s Handycam line.

FE
You will see lens names with "FE" in them and others that just say "E Mount". This is confusing because FE looks like a mount type – it’s not. "FE" designates that it’s built for full frame sensors. Fortunately, Sony’s full frame mirrorless cameras – like the a7 III or Sony a7CR – are E mount just as the APS-C mirrorless cameras (a6700, a6100) are.

All FE lenses are compatible with both types of camera. However, not all non-FE E mount lenses are compatible with full frame – some are built specifically for crop frame. But the a7 series cameras all have a crop frame mode, so if you’re ever stuck using a crop frame lens on one, just switch into that mode! Please note that E mount lenses – whether they say FE or E in the title – are not compatible with A mount Sony cameras without an adapter.

We hope this helps you find your perfect lens! Here are a few of our favorites for E mount lenses:

Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II
- Support for AF up to 30 FPS speeds.
- Maintains focus tracking even while zooming.
- Impressive closeup performance at just 8.3" from subject.
- The perfect zoom range for the widest variety of subjects.

Sirui 24mm f/2.8 Anamorphic 1.33x Sony E Mount
- Compatible with APS-C/Super 35 Sensor E Mount cameras.
- Blue "sci-fi" horizontal flaring.
- Wider Horizontal FOV creates equivalent of an 18mm lens (x your crop factor, usually either 1.6x or 1.5x).
- Portable option for shooting in cinematic 2:4:1 in a 16:9 setting.

SLR Magic 50mm f/1.1 Cine II E Mount
- Manual focus cinema prime with 0.8 pitch focus and iris control gearing.
- Full frame coverage.
- Pairs with 52mm filters.
- Under a pound.

Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 GM STF OSS
- Smooth Trans Focus (STF) that uses an apodization filter (like a radial neutral density filter) to produce smoother bokeh. This is also a macro lens with a macro mode switching ring.
- Direct Drive SSM focus drive provides fast, precise, quiet autofocus that's suitable for video work.
- Optical layout has also been designed to reduce peripheral highlight distortion.

The Strengths of Select Sony Cameras

Sony has created cameras suitable for very particular features, although all of them have the flexibility to cover a wide range of subjects. Here are the major strengths (and some drawbacks to know about) of our most popular models:

Sony a7 V
- 61 megapixel sensor for massive 9504 x 6336 images.
- 50-102,400 ISO range for exceptional exposure latitude.
- Hot shoe only with no PC sync port, which could be a problem for some studio shooters. The hot shoe is a multi-interface shoe, however, and will accept digital mics.
- 5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization with unlimited 4K60 recording and 7K oversampling.

Sony a7S III
- Massive 40-409,600 ISO range for unrivaled exposure latitude.
- 5-Axis In-Body Image Stabilization with 4K60/16-bit raw out over full-size HDMI (not unlimited at 60p).
- Pass-through charging support.
- 12.1MP with 4240 x 2832 files, which might be a bit small for some photographers.

Sony ZV-E1
- Designed with vloggers in mind.
- Built-in 3-capsule mic (with included windscreen).
- Dynamic super slow motion effects at frame rates up to 240 FPS at 1080p with full pixel readout and 4K up to 120p.

Sony a9 III
- This is the world's first full frame mirrorless camera with a global shutter. It can shoot at 120 FPS with no blackout and can flash sync up to 1/80,000th of a second!
- UHD 4K video up to 60 FPS and 120 FPS with no cropping. 16-bit raw out via HDMI.
- AI autofocus with up to 120x AF/AE focus calculations per second.

Sony FX3
- This is among our most popular cameras! It offers many of the benefits of the Sony FX6 but in a form factor closer to the Sony a7S III.
- S-Cinetone mode for matching to VENICE, FX9, or FX6 cameras plus S-Log3/2 gamut support and 10-bit HLG.
- Includes top handle. Ideal hand-holdable, streamlined cinema camera.
