Overview

The Metabones EF to MFT Mount T Speed Booster XL allows you to pair Canon EF mount full frame lenses with certain Micro Four Thirds cameras (see Notes tab) and increases the effective field of view and the maximum aperture of the lens you're using. This is handy for achieving wider views with more dramatic depth of field effects on what is otherwise a sometimes uncompromising camera sensor due to its small Micro Four Thirds size.

The Speed Booster XL works by condensing the light from a full frame EF mount lens before projecting it onto certain Micro Four Thirds sensors. These sensors are able to gather more light than normal and reduce the crop factor you experience from 2x to 1.28x. For example, your Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM lens becomes an effective 51.2mm with this Speed Booster XL on certain Micro Four Thirds cameras instead of the 80mm effective view you'd have with a straight adapter. This effectively turns your 2x Micro Four Thirds sensor into a 1.3x APS-H one! Plus, you have the benefit of using a wide variety of Canon EF lenses while retaining lens AF and image stabilization. Metabones has designed particularly good AF support for Panasonic Micro Four Thirds cameras, such as the GH5, making this adapter a boon for GH series shooters wanting to use EF mount lenses. That said, Panasonic's video AF will always carry a risk of hunting longer with an adapter, including this one, versus the performance seen in native Panasonic lenses. Also note that when using Cinema 4K video mode, the horizontal full frame crop factor is reduced from 2.34x to 1.50x closer to Super 35/APS-C.

By concentrating the image circle from a lens, this Speed Booster XL also "brightens" the image maximum lens apertures are increased by approximately 1.3 stop down to the sub-f/1.0 range (maximum of f/0.80). Both the camera end and the lens end of this adapter are made of brass that are precision-machined and plated with chromium. The Metabones EF to MFT T Speed Booster XL is a great tool for those using certain Micro Four Thirds cameras (particularly the GH4 and GH5) who want to also use a large selection of Canon EF mount lenses while getting that added benefit of a "boost" to both field of view and maximum aperture.

Please see the "Notes" section for important information about autofocus and lens compatibility.

  • This Speed Booster is compatible only with EF mount lenses and not Canon EF-S mount lenses.
  • This Speed Booster is compatible with the following Micro Four Thirds cameras:

    • Panasonic GH5S, GH5, GH4, and GH3
    • Panasonic G3, G4, G5, G6, G7, G10
    • Panasonic GF5, GF6
    • Panasonic GX1, GX8, GX80/85
    • Olympus E-PL7 (No Video AF)
    • Olympus PEN-F (No Video AF)
    • Blackmagic Cinema camera with Micro Four Thirds Mount*
    • Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera with Micro Four Thirds Mount*

      • Special Note: You may find that this Speed Booster mounts and operates on cameras not listed above, such as the E-M1 or AF100. Please do not experiment here. This Speed Booster makes slight contact with the protective shutter cover of Micro Four Thirds cameras not listed above and could cause damage that costs you money.

        • This Speed Booster will not operate correctly when trying to use it on Canon's CN-E collection of cinema lenses for still photography purposes.
        • When using lenses with apertures faster than f/1.8, the pre-boost apertures will be displayed in the camera. For example, it won't show f/0.7 with a f/1.2 lens attached. It will show f/1.2. The widest aperture where you'll see a boost displayed is f/1.8 (which will show f/1.0). The "boosting" is still occurring, it just doesn't show it on read-out for these ultra-fast lenses.
        • While technically compatible with any EF mount lens, please take notice if your third-party lens has any mount protrusions, like spikes or levers. These will damage the Speed Booster.
        • Autofocus is supported with this Speed Booster except on Olympus cameras. You may also see excessive hunting with Tamron lenses.
        • There is no support for Focus Stacking or Focus Bracketing with your Olympus when paired with this Speed Booster.
        • If you are attempting to pair both a Canon lens with a Canon extender to this Speed Booster, autofocus is disabled if the combined maximum aperture of the lens and the extender is f/5.6 or smaller (higher number).
        • The following EF mount lenses have been tested by Metabones for use with this Speed Booster. Other EF lenses are certainly compatible but the following have been fully vetted by Metabones:

          • Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L Fisheye

The following have been tested by Metabones community members and then sanctioned by Metabones. This list will expand over time. Please visit Metabones' website for the most recent results:

            • Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS
            • Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L
            • Canon EF 200mm f/2L IS

The following have been tested to work only when paired with the Panasonic G7, GX8, and GX80/85:

              • Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L
              • Canon EF 135mm f/2L
              • Canon EF 200mm f/2.8L
              • Canon EF 300mm f/4 IS
              • Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L

                * Blackmagic Users: This Speed Booster was designed with the GH4 and GH5 in mind, which means it works optimally with the 4mm filter glass found near the sensor of those cameras. Blackmagic uses thinner glass for this filter, which is fine from a compatibility standpoint but could cause you to see aberrations when using this adapter along with large apertures.
