Types of Light Modifiers
Light modifiers are a common way to change how your photography looks with very few steps, but if you are a new photographer, deciding which type you need could be overwhelming. Each modifier has its own job.
Reflective Umbrellas
Most photographers use reflective umbrellas. These light modifiers provide more control for you to manipulate your lighting. The opaque interior is reflective and points away from your subject. The concentration of the beam of light will depend on the curve of the umbrella. Deep ones produce a more focused beam while a shallow one creates a feathered appearance on the edges.
Translucent Umbrellas
Commonly known as shoot-through umbrellas, the translucent variety are between your light and your subject. If you are brand new to photography, you will probably want to lean to use this modifier before any other kind.
Soft Boxes
There are a wide range of these modifiers available in a variety of sizes, materials, diffuser options and shapes. This makes it easy to find something that will match your lighting needs. Soft boxes make your light source larger, and some brands use closed backs to reflect all light forward and make it even softer.
Beauty Dishes
A beauty dish is a metal piece of equipment that is common for portrait photographers. They work to guide the light outward and onto the subject, illuminating important details such as makeup.
What to Use
The type of light modifier rental you need depends on the type of photography you provide. If you dabble in all types of photography, but don't want to spend money on equipment you won't use often, you can rent light modifiers from BorrowLenses. This option is more affordable and also lets you try out a variety of modifiers and brands to determine which you like best.
