The Benefits of Renting a Camera from BL

There are rentals for a lot of things, from cars to designer dresses, power tools to bikes, and much more, but you might not realize just how useful renting photo and video equipment is. For one, buying the gear you want for each of the types of gigs you do can get very expensive – prohibitively so for the hobbyist. But that doesn't mean you should go without trying the latest tech! Here are just a few of the benefits of renting:

Convenience When Traveling
Leave your personal gear at home and eliminate the risk of it getting broken or stolen.

Special Occasions
Perhaps most of the time you go solo but you have a particularly large event to cover and you want your assistant to use the same type of gear as you. This is a perfect use-case for renting.

Gain Experience
Don't learn on the job study a piece of gear ahead of time! Rent a camera or lighting kit and get hands-on with it before jumping into a major event assistants, take note!

Low-Cost Testing
Not sure if you want to upgrade or if some certain new shiny system will work with your current accessories? Instead of using credit to purchase that high-megapixel camera and relying too much on a decent returns policy, why not just borrow the item for as little as dollars a day?

What Kind of Camera To Get

Brand, mount type, sensor size – there is a lot to consider when getting a camera! Here are the basic types that we offer:

DSLR
With the rise of mirrorless, these are quickly becoming our "classic" models. But they are still incredibly relevant and popular. We offer DSLRs in both Canon EF and Nikon F mount with both full frame and APS-C/crop frame sensors. DSLRs have great ergonomics, good battery life, and a wide variety of lenses to choose from thanks to their long history.

Mirrorless
With their svelte size, handy menu-displaying electronic viewfinders, and ever-improving video specs, it's no wonder everyone is making the switch to mirrorless. We carry mirrorless cameras from Nikon, Canon, Sony, Blackmagic, Panasonic, and Fuji.

Cinema
RED, ARRI, Blackmagic, and the Canon C-series – these are just a few of our ever-expanding offerings in the professional cinema space.

Camcorders
Not just for soccer parents, camcorders have remained an important form factor not only for broadcast work but for vlogging and documentaries – in addition to being a great choice for casual recording.

Medium Format
When only the biggest will do, get yourself behind a medium format camera! These make particularly good rentals since few need this kind of resolution every day. They are the ideal choice for that special assignment.

Compact Cameras
Instead of being taken over completely by smartphones, brands have made small cameras smarter with bigger sensors, sharper glass, and incredible digital zooming.

Action Cams
Every year, brands like GoPro push the envelope on what you can do with these palm-sized devices. With the right accessory you can now record from just about any POV you can dream up.

The Most Popular Cameras for 2024

Without a doubt, twe are fully into the mirrorless age with more and more people doing both photography and videography assignments. This means having a camera that can "do it all", so to speak. And this year we have some major heavy hitters that can, indeed, do it all.

The choice now comes down to personal preference. Do you prefer the lens selection of one mount type vs another? Can you sacrifice a little speed in favor of a higher-megapixel sensor? Is full frame essential or would you rather have the portability and unique color science of, say, a Fuji camera? Do you have the storage and processing power for 6K footage or is 4K enough?

If you're ever confused about what the right camera is for you, our crew are all working professionals and passionate hobbyists themselves. BL gear experts are here to help you figure out what's compatible with your setup and answer any questions about workflow. In the meantime, here are our top recommendations for 2022:

Fuji X-H2S
Record 6.2K or high-speed 4K/120P for up to 240 minutes thanks to a new heat-dissipating structure and a much faster processor compared to prior models. Photographers can enjoy blackout-free, high-speed burst up to 40 FPS. An improved AF prediction algorithm offers a major boost in subject tracking and autofocus accuracy for both photo and video.

Sony a9 III
It's here, the world's first full frame mirrorless camera with a global shutter! On top of this, it can handle 120 FPS with no blackout and can flash sync up to 1/80,000th of a second! Never miss a moment with this next-generation a9 III. It is a fantastic choice for sports, wildlife, creative flash work, distortion free action scenes, and more.

Nikon Z9
Covering the needs of both fast-action photographers and high-resolution videographers, the Z9 is equipped with a 45.7MP full frame sensor, 8K recording with full pixel readout, a powerful processing engine that is 12x faster than prior models, and built-in wireless LAN.

Canon EOS R5 C
Take advantage of 8K raw without having to spring for a large and professional cinema camera. With baked-in workflow for Canon VR, 4K120p slow and fast motion recording in 4:2:2 10-bit, and the latest version of Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with iTR AF X, this camera is ready for just about any video project you throw at it.

Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro
This is probably the most portable camera you can get while still taking advantage of many of the kinds of features you get only on large cinema systems: built-in neutral density filters, dual (mini) XLR ports, a huge monitoring screen, built-in timecode, and Dual Native ISO.

RED KOMODO ST 6K
In a cool, limited edition color, this KOMODO ST incorporates RED's legendary image quality into a form factor that is more all-in-one and portable than prior models. The global shutter sensor allows you to capture every moment without sacrificing dynamic range. Avoid blurred and curved lines with even the fastest moving subjects. With a touch-to-focus screen, compatibility with Phase-Detect AF (on some lenses), and flexible raw options up to 6K, this camera is ideal for any project demanding the highest quality.

Panasonic S5 IIX
With 12-bit raw recording, IP streaming support, Dual Native ISO, a built-in cooling fan, built-in stabilization, compatibility with anamorphic lenses, and a cool blackout paint job, the S5 IIX is a practical, yet stylish, choice for video recording.

OM SYSTEM OM-1
Olympus got a rebranding and released this new flagship that's equipped with cutting-edge noise processing technology at the highest ISOs, a 1,053-point Quad Pixel AF system for high-precision focus stacking, and digital ND filters – all while maintaining their legacy micro four thirds mount so you can take advantage of a wide variety of lenses new and old.

GoPro HERO12 Black
GoPros just keep getting better and better. This one offers HDR 5.3K and 4K, 240 FPS slow motion in 2.7K, advanced stabilization, 2x longer battery life, a webcam mode for live streaming in 1080p, and Bluetooth for earbuds – all while maintaining its 33' depth rating and small form factor.
