The pace of gear releases in our industry seems to be constantly increasing these days. Every month, we have new photo or video gear coming into our offices so we thought we’d start putting together a roundup of everything new we have available to rent. Here’s what’s come in during the last month or so:
Profoto gear just keeps getting better and better. The guys over at Resource Mag Online have put up a nice video review that you can check out here, but here’s the short and sweet: It’s Profoto’s legendary quality meets portability meets TTL metering for Canon and Nikon shooters. You can, of course, also hook up your standard PocketWizards for manual triggering as well. This is a fantastic light for location shooting when you want a bit more power than a standard speedlight.
Since we’re on the subject of lighting, the guys at Elinchrom haven’t been standing still either. We now have one of their newest lights in stock, and it’s available as a kit that comes with light stands, small softboxes, and the Skyport SPEED transmitter for triggering these flashes. We love these lights, and you can pair them with Elinchrom’s legendary Deep Octa or 6′ Light Bank for some incredible lighting.
Fuji keeps making waves with their incredible line of X-series cameras and lenses, but this particular one is really the one Fuji shooters have been waiting for. The equivalent of a 24-82.5mm lens on a full-frame camera, this zoom is weather-sealed with cameras like the X-T1, has the same great optics we’ve now come to expect from Fuji, and has excellent autofocus capabilities.
Tamron SP 15-30mm f/2.8 Di VC USD Lens for Canon, Nikon, and Sony
Tamron’s been on a nice tear recently as well, coming out with some pretty awesome lenses. This one, a wide-to-standard zoom is available for Canon, Nikon, and Sony A-mount cameras. It’ll cover a full-frame sensor, but Sony users wanting to use this on their A7-series will need an adapter like the Sony Alpha LA-EA4 Camera Mount Adapter, as it’s only available for the Sony Alpha cameras like the A99: Sony Alpha Mount, Nikon Mount, Canon Mount.
Canon’s new 11-24mm f/4 zoom is now its widest rectilinear zoom, and is a big hit with landscape and architecture shooters alike. It’s also available as part our our Canon Lens Essentials package, and if you’re a Canon shooter, that package has you covered from 11mm all the way to 200mm.
The OM-D E-M5 was the first of its series, and when it came out, it garnered a lot of praise for its unique style and multi-axis image stabilization in-body. Now, Olympus has come out with the Mark II version of the camera that triggered this series, and it brings even faster performance and better low-light shooting at high ISOs. The touch screen is now fully articulating, and there is a really cool feature that allows it to produce 40MP images by combining 8 imagines in-camera.
New Olympus Lenses
Of course, a new camera should also bring some new lenses to go with it, and Olympus hasn’t slacked off in that area either. First, we have the ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 lens, an all-round travel-friendly optic that is super-compact and splash proof. What caught our eye though is this absolutely stunning M. Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro lens, which gives you the equivalent of am 80-300mm f/2.8 lens on 35mm. Olympus is serious about investing in its pro line of Micro Four Thirds cameras, and this lens proves that.
Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 AT-X 116 Pro DX
Tokina’s 11-16mm f/2.8 lens has long been a favorite of crop sensor camera shooters. If you rock a 7D Mark II or a D7200, this successor to that venerable optic will give your full-frame-shooting friends a bit of glass envy. Available in both Canon and Nikon mounts, Tokina’s lenses continue their tradition of high-quality glass.
Samsung’s NX1 is the first camera in this new platform that we’re carrying. Normally known for their Android smartphones, SSD drives, and lawsuits with Apple, the NX1 represents a pretty big move for Samsung. Its 4K shooting capabilities might have had us putting it in last week’s video gear roundup, but the 30.7MP sensor and 209 phase-detect autofocus sensors and 15 frames per second at 28MP camera lend credence to its aspirations as a capable still shooter as well.
Like I said earlier, what’s a new camera without some new lenses? Well, in Samsung’s case, we’ve got 8 of them, covering the gamut from 12mm to 15omm. There’s a lot here, but the standouts are the 16-50mm f/2-2.8 lens and the 50-150mm f/2.8 lens, both of which feature optical image stabilization. If you’re a portrait shooter, you’ll appreciate Samsung’s inclusion of an 85mm f/1.4 lens as well.
All of our RED cameras have now received the Dragon sensor updates. Enabling up to 6K resolution, 16.5+ stops of dynamic range, and better color rendition, these cameras are now available in a variety of configurations.
We’ve carried Rokinon lenses for some time now, but we recently got in the DS line of Cine lenses which all sport a T-stop range of 1.5-22 for a uniform exposure range that will help prevent you from having to change settings on your camera to match lighting conditions when swapping lengths. The set now includes the 50mm T/1.5 lens. These are available to rent as a kit or individually.
The Lexar 256GB 510MB/s CFast Memory card is designed for full HD and 4K video recording and can keep up with burst mode shooting from professional camcorders and cameras. Please keep in mind though: the CFast format is a continuation of the more familiar CF, or Compact Flash, format but they are NOT interchangeable. CFast currently is compatible with only select professional-grade cameras.
Litepanels has a new Bi-Color LED that can cover tungsten to daylight temperatures and has a dimmable output option. There’s also an option to run the fan or turn it off for quiet scenes. It features a 72º beam with flicker-free performance and is only 5.3″ deep.
The Wooden Camera Director’s Monitor Cage is designed for LCD monitors and recorders and sports a battery mounting bracket for both V-mount and Gold mount. This cage provides stability, ergonomics, and mounting versatility for your on-set display/recorder and is ideal for documentarians, narrative filmmaking, studio shooting, and sets large and small.
Now you can add continuous power to your NEX or A7 series cameras for shooting in locations where you have access to AC power. Super-handy for indoor or studio shooting, these will keep you from managing a fistful of batteries.
This is a camera a lot of folks have been waiting on. Up to 60fps at 4K resolution recorded internally, 12 stops of dynamic range, and plenty of input/output options, the AJA CION has garnered some pretty good reviews for its image quality. It’s now available to rent in a variety of configurations from us.
Brushless gimbal stabilizers are becoming a crowed market, and we try and carry some of the ones we think our customers will like. DJI’s Ronin definitely falls into that category with features like built-in Auto Tune Stability that intelligently tunes this stabilizer to your camera in as little as 5 minutes, 3 modes of operation, and compatibility with a multitude of cameras and lenses. For your viewing pleasure, here’s a quick video on how to balance the Ronin.
The Sennheiser 2000ENG-SKP Portable Wireless Plug-in System includes a receiver that is designed to receive wireless audio signal from the included SKP 2000 plug-on transmitter. You can scan for available frequencies with the EK 2000 and sync up to the SKP 2000 via infrared. A headphone output is included so that you can monitor your signal and the plug-in transmitter can be paired with any 3-pin XLR microphone so that it can be used wirelessly. This system is ideal for event videographers or to complete a field audio kit to wirelessly receive audio without taking up a lot of space.
If you’re looking for a solution to stream video straight to the web or to remote clients, the Teradek Cube is your go-to device. Plug in your camera via HDMI, connect it to either a WiFi hotspot or a wired ethernet network, and you’re good to go. It even has a hotshoe adapter to mount right onto your camera.
We have some great Compact Prime lenses for rent, but if you want to use neutral-density filters with them, you’ll need a matte box kit and some rectangular ND filters, which can bulk up your kit. Well, not anymore. The Schneider ND kit will fit many of those lenses with super-wide filter rings. But be careful – these are expensive filters and we will be monitoring them for scratches and dings.
This one has some of us really excited. An LED light that’s bendable and waterproof? And still plenty bright? And one I get to test out this weekend? Sign me up!
Okay, that last part might not happen if someone gets to it before me, but this is still a light you video shooters should really be interested in. Though there isn’t a battery solution (yet! Westcott says they’ll have one at NAB, which starts tomorrow), the flexibility of this light should still make it a great choice for some sticky lighting situations.
For video, fresnel lights are still the most used ones, and Arri is one of the standard bearers in this market. The T1 light is a relatively lightweight 1000-watt 3200K fresnel that can go from spot to flood and comes with barn doors for more shaping ability.
The latest installation in Sigma’s Art line of lenses that are designed to achieve optical performance and are suited specifically for creative and artistic applications. This lens is great for astrophotography as it suppresses blur near the edges of the frame and is also ideal for events, interiors, cityscapes, and vistas.
Both boast 1080p HD video, touchscreen LCDs, 24MP sensors, and WiFi but the T6s also includes Servo AF in Live View, an optical viewfinder option with automatic eye sensor, and a top-facing LCD info panel.
