Underwater Housings for Cameras, Lenses, and Flashes: Ultimate AquaTech Guide

Underwater Housings for Cameras, Lenses, and Flashes: Ultimate AquaTech Guide

Underwater housing units are large cases for your camera bodies, lenses, and flashes. Take your gear up to 33′ underwater for fashion shoots, capturing athletes in strong surf, snorkeling, and more. Only certain housings go with certain items and some housings are only compatible with water surfaces and not for prolonged periods underwater. These housings are not suitable for scuba diving. They are recommended for use at depths of 16.4′ or less when submerged for more than 5 minutes.

AquaTech underwater equipment is never available for same-day pickup or for overnight shipping. Lead time is always 2 days for these products. This post is a guide to help you with compatibility. Need even more help? Please contact AquaTech directly for compatibility questions. Our AquaTech rentals are not kept on-site and are kept with AquaTech for strict quality control. Therefore, we are not able to test out port/housing combinations or physically troubleshoot specific items for you. Please contact them for any of those questions prior to submitting your rental order with us.

AquaTech Underwater Lens Ports

Your lens needs its own housing unit to attach to your body housing unit. Here is a run down of the lens ports we now have and what lenses they go with. For a much more complete list, please see AquaTech’s official compatibility chart (last updated May 1, 2018).

Special Note: Some ports have dome front elements and others have flat front elements. The difference is that dome front elements are good for deep-water clarity but often require extension rings if pairing with zoom lenses. More on extension rings below. Also, items that are marked “Above Water/At Water Surface” are not suitable for even shallower dives (16-33′). They are best for shooting near the surfaces of water, like when snorkeling or photographing surfers. Those not marked with this are fine for dives of under 5 minutes up to 33′ or 16′ for longer than 5 minutes.

Important Compatibility Note: There are 2 main classes of lens port: P/PD-series and LP-series. P/PD-series ports are designed for Elite/Delphin models of housing. The LP-series ports are designed for ATB models of housing. They are not interchangeable.

AquaTech Underwater Housings for Flashes

Underwater housings for flashes are useful for underwater fine art photography, fashion shoots, and portraits.

Strike 580 for Canon Speedlite 580 EX II
Strike 910 for Nikon Speedlight SB-910
Strike 5000 for Nikon Speedlight SB-5000

To go with these, we have housings for Pocket Wizards and lead cables to fire two flashes at once off-camera, and more!

AquaTech Housing Accessories

Pistol grip triggers are an optional accessory to rent with your housing unit. They provide an ergonomic alternative to the side handles of the housing units and provide a dedicated AF button and shutter release that may be easier to reach than the one native to the housing. Pole shutters offer the same benefits but with the added feature of being 27″ long for hard-to-reach subjects.

  1. Is there a port combination for an AFS Nikkor 24mm/1.8g on a Nikon D800E for underwater work? My newer lens is not on the list above, and is a bit smaller than the 24mm/1.4 AFS Nikkor. I’d be snorking with it. Do you rent a float device to keep the housing from sinking in case it slips?
