The Standard IR (720nm) Converted Nikon D5500 DSLR Camera replaces the normal hot mirror filter with a custom-made infrared glass filter, allowing you to capture infrared light instead of just visible light. The camera has also been calibrated to accurately focus IR light in one of three ways:

  • 1) In Live View mode with AF turned on.
  • 2) In Live View mode with manual focusing.
  • 3) With IR focus marks, which entails focusing with your lens through the viewfinder like normal but then shifting the lens' focus collar to line up with the IR marks on the barrel (red marks just off from the regular white focus marks). IR focus marks on lenses are approximate and many modern lenses do not include them at all.

Learn more about focusing with an IR-converted camera in this tutorial: Infrared Focus Marks on SLR Lenses.

With this converted camera, you can take false-color and black and white images with a dreamlike or lurid appearance that sometimes includes darker skies with water and clouds standing out strongly. Eyes will often turn out black and skin sometimes milky, giving portraits a spooky effect. Greens become pinks and purples. In post-production, you can swap the red and blue channels, desaturate, and more for really unique landscapes and portraits.

Please note that this camera has a non-removable internal IR filter conversion. If you want to rent just a regular Nikon D5500, please click here.

We plan to expand to more camera models if these converted cameras prove popular. If you decide you want to have your own camera converted, we recommend doing it through LifePixel.
