For an updated version of this camera with unlimited video recording capabilities, a bigger buffer and deeper grip, please see the a6600.

The Sony a6400 is extremely portable while still incorporating many of the features found in Sony's bigger and more expensive full frame mirrorless lineup. Here are some of the high-level performance features of this innovative little camera:

Enhanced Autofocus, Shooting Speed, and Tracking

With continuous AF shooting up to 11 frames per second, the a6400 is a great choice for fast-moving subjects, from major sporting events to casual family events. Get up to 46 frames fired in raw in one continuous burst (up to 116 in JPEG mode). Shoot silently up to 8 FPS, which is a great feature for covering performances. Track your subject with an enhanced Real-Time Eye AF function that reliably recognizes human faces and focuses on your subject's eye (manually choose which eye or let the camera decide for you). In continuous mode, Real-Time Eye AF will track your subject's eye even as they move around or look down. The outstanding accuracy of this feature is a huge benefit to portrait shooters. It's made possible thanks to Sony's processing and sensor technology, which deliver high-precision AF points that cover a much wider field than many conventional DSLRs.

Similar to Real-Time Eye AF, which is suited for portraiture, Real-Time Tracking AF is the perfect tool for capturing sports and wildlife. It keeps your subject in perfect focus so that you don't miss a single dramatic moment out on the field. A newly-developed algorithm can process spatial information based on a range of visual cues: color, distance, brightness, and facial recognition. All of this allows the a6400 to perform seamless tracking of an athlete or animal. Touch Tracking and Touch Focus allow you to select your subject via the LCD screen for both photography and videography.

Boosted Light Collection Sensor Capabilities

The 24.2 megapixel sensor features better circuit processing to increase light collection efficiency, not only making the a6400 easy to use in low light but also allows for a more natural depiction of textures. Noise reduction is also improved for much cleaner imagery at the highest ISO ranges. Color reproduction has also been reworked for much more life-like skin tones and foliage coloring. Portraits and landscapes now look much more natural, crisp, and clear.

Pro-Level 4K Functions

Boasting a full-pixel readout with no pixel binning, the a6400 is equipped to deliver high-resolution 4K video to HDR(HLG) and S-Log/S-Gamut with options for slow motion up to 120 FPS. The sensor captures at the Super 35mm size and sports Fast Hybrid AF for smooth, steady focus while recording. Capture professional sound with the 3.5mm microphone jack or flip the screen up 180° to not only more easily frame vlogging-style shots but also control a variety of functions while in front of the camera. It has 8 areas of customization for up to 89 specific shooting functions that are designed to give you full creative control.

At only 2.4" deep, under 5" wide, and under 1 lb, the a6400 is the ideal travel camera that doesn't sacrifice pro-level settings and features. It is also a great choice for candids, events, and vlogging.

The a6400 vs The a6500

The a6500, despite the name, is actually older than the a6400. They are very similar. The a6400 is benefited from newer technology, with a 180° flipping screen, fast AF, superb tracking, and unlimited recording. The a6500 has 5-axis in-body stabilization. Both feature 4K shooting, 3.5mm microphone ports, slow motion capability, similar battery life (though the a6400 fairs slightly better here), and 24.2MP APS-C sensors.
