Description
The NEX-7 is Sony's high-resolution follow-up to its wildly popular mirrorless, interchangeable lens camera; the NEX-5. This camera delivers even higher resolution at 24.3 megapixels, more video recording options, and a built-in flash and Sony Alpha hotshoe as well, making it a totally loaded camera that will easily slip into a coat pocket. In fact, some are even comparing it to the flagship A77 camera, as they both share the same sensor and many of the same features.

Fred: There are a lot of very detailed reviews of this camera around the web, so I will be brief. My main cameras are a D90 and Canon S-90, and for various reasons I wanted to try the NEX-7. Here's my summary (based on using it with the Sony 18-200 lens over a weekend): Pros: Lightweight, good form factor, very clear images, the 18-200 is a great all-purpose lens. Need to know: Not all that intuitive. Without documentation it took quite a lot of time to read the manual online. Concerns: The EVF didn't seem to work every time. It seemed to freeze up; I had to press the shutter a second time to activate it. It was not easy getting used to the view through the EVF. The light was not always accurate, and even after adjusting the dioptor, it never seemed completely in focus. Cons: I came across this in other reviews, but the location of video record button is just awful. I must have taken 30 short videos by mistake over my three-day rental. It's just in a bad location, and it takes very little pressure to activiate it. This is close to being a deal-breaker in terms of a purchase. Some dials are too sensitive--e.g., I kept changing the ISO without meaning to. Also, I experienced a shadow using the built-in flash caused by the length of the lens. I also came across this problem in other reviews. Overall: Over three days, I felt I was using a computer as much as a camera. Using the EVF made me feel a bit "removed" from the subject, since of course a digital image is not the same as looking at a mirrored image in a traditional DSLR. So I'm left torn between investing more in my D90 (despite the trepidation around extra weight and more "stuff" to carry around) and looking into the mirrorless world more. I had expected to place an order after using the NEX-7, but I am definitely putting that on pause.
