Christopher: I rented this lens for a trip to to NW Trek wildlife park and would say that I was underwhelmed on it's performance. I spent most of my time in manual focus due to the low light performance of the lens. I don't think that it was my A700 that was causing this problem because I switched to my Sony 50mm f 1.4 lens and did not have this problem. I think the next lens I rent will be the Sony 70-200 f2.8 G in hopes that a faster lens will give me better performance.

Aaron: This lens is excellent for what it is meant for - outdoor shots with lots of light. The focus mechanism is great and the extra focus hold button is useful. The lens' downisde is it's bulk, while it is not heavier than expected - it is just very big. You can take candid shots with this - but not on a street without being noticed as "that guy with the huge lens" and then, when you zoom out- it gets even longer and more attention grabbing. Using this on a tripod was a dream, as I got some shots I could never get still enough with a long lens on a tripod attached to my body.

Sharon: I used this lens this summer at Yellowstone national park. It did take great pictures. As you might imagine Yellowstone weather changes greatly. We once traveled from one spot to another--1 mile distance it went from sunny to cloudy and windy to hail to snow all in the space of 5 minutes. The lens is the heaviest that I had ever used, ( i only have kit lens) I was able to climb hills (for big horn sheep) and scurry down hills (bears). As to being conspicious...well in yellowstone I found my lens to the junior to many of the professionals running around. I have pictures of bears, wolves, bison, that my other lens would have captured, but this lens gave me much better shots than than i would have gotten with my kit lens. I am a amateur photographer and enjoyed this lens.

Rick: I tried it to see what a higher cost lens - the "G" series - was like. I loved it. Very fast focus and so quiet I thought it was not on at first. I used it to shot birds on the shoreline. Very sharp shots. Only negative is you must use a tripod which makes sneaking around the bushes harder to do - but not impossible.
