While I'm not a professional, this camera was very good! I have a 18-55mm and 55-200mm, but wanted to have one go to lens during our trip. the 18-300 served it's purpose to the "T". Focus was sharp, didn't have to use a tripod at 300mm and overall it was a great lens. I will admit it is heavy, but it packed a big punch. As for borrow lenses, didn't have any interaction other than a email saying the lens had been shipped. I was able to track the shipment and even had a pre-printed return label. Stopping by the local UPS was easy as I sent the lens back. I will be a return customer as the process was simply and the price was reasonably cheaper than others. The only thing (Not a complaint) was that when the lens arrived, it had not been cleaned up and had particles in the grooves of the exterior. It was not a big deal for me, but now that I think about it, maybe that should have been something someone should have taken care of before sending to a new customer. As I guy, I didn't care, but I do recall my wife making a comment about the debris and grit in the grooves. For the record, that is the only reason why I noted "very good" rather than excellent. Sample images: Taken from our balcony during a recent vacation where the Nikon 18-300 lens was used. The first photo depicts @ 18mm then a zoom to 300mm. The second set (night-time) photos is a second comparison. I rented this lens too shoot my grandsons baseball tournament on the Oregon coast. The lens focus quickly and gave me the reach to get some good action shots. After the tournament we took went down the coast and feel in love with this lens all over again. Great focal length that stayed on my camera the whole week - never had a need to switch lenses - from wide angle scenics to distant action - it did the trick perfectly - Loved it so much extended the rental twice. Very versatile piece of glass! I rented this with a D7000. Perfect pair when I needed to take a good burst of photos per second with little to no time to switch glass. I used a SB800 flash when I could not rely on natural light. Since this lens is big, the in camera flash is too small and you will see a shadow on photos of the lens. I got a lot of complements about this lens from other DSLR enthusiasts who saw me use it. I look forward to borrowing this lens again or if I have enough cash, I will buy my own.
I have been using a Nikkor 18-200 VR that I really like, but there are times that I'd like some more reach, so I rented the 18-300 VR to try. This lens is a little bigger and heavier than the 18-200, although I didn't find it to be a problem. I found the image quality to be excellent, crisp and sharp, and the extra 100mm was very useful. Even though this is not a macro lens, it will focus close and has good bokeh when shooting wide open. I liked it enough that I just purchased one.
