Description
This lens caused quite a stir when it was announced, mostly because Nikon already leads the pack with its stunning 14-24mm f/2.8G AF-S ED. As it stands the 16-35mm is a compromise; it's not as fast or as wide as the 14-24mm, but it's a bit less expensive, about half the size and it accepts filters. The filter issue is a big deal for a lot of people since the 14-24mm has an enormous, bulging front element that is completely unprotected aside from the built-in petal hood. In terms of edge-to-edge sharpness it is very sharp, so no worries there.

The 16-35mm also has built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) -- not the most useful feature if you're shooting landscapes but if you're going to be handheld in low light you will appreciate it. Like all super-wide-angle lenses, this one shows some barrel distortion on the wide end so keep this in mind when shooting architecture.

Benjamin: Loved shooting with this in Iceland! I needed a wide angle for my D7000 and wanted the quality of a FX lens with the option of using filters. This was a great choice for landscape and low light indoor shots.

Ronald: I rented this lens as an experiment during a shoot in Iceland. I wanted to compare my tripod mounted 24-70 F2.8 with this 16-35......WOW, I have some handheld shots @ 15th sec F11 that rival the tripod mounted shots at the same settings....Definitely would recommend this lens for those not wanting to use a tripod but want lots of depth of field..IE 1/15...1/30...1/60 @ F11 or F16
