While I had read that about 1 in 4 of these 300s are soft I figured I would take my chances - well the one I rented was VERY soft, could not get a sharp shot even on tripod in a test situation in broad daylight (yes, I tested with IS on, set on 1, on set to 2, and off to no avail), in the field on the Kenai Penisula it was really useless. Hazy/foggy images as well with no contrast on the colors even with a big bump in PS got nothing really of use, we had Orcas, Humpbacks, Grizzlys, Bald eagles, Brown bears, Caribou and Moose and I have nothing much to show for it, thank god I took my 24-105 L lens. Service and shipping by Borrowlenses.com was excellent and I would highly recommend them to anyone needing equipment for rent, this particular 300 needs to be sent back to Canon for refurb or new one!

I rented the 300mm f/4 to shoot a local college football game and I usually use my 70-300mm but was a variable aperture lens going for f/4 to f/5.6 and I liked what I was getting racked out all the way at 300mm @ f/5.6 but I wanted a faster prime lens that would be a fixed aperture. After the game, I went back home to upload my photos and I was amazed at the difference between my 70-300mm @ 300mm and the 300mm f/4. The background was more blown out since I was at f/4 and at f/5.6 which was what I knew going into it but it was the colors that struck me. The 300mm f/4 produces beautiful colors. When I'm shooting football, I usually have to go into post-processing to get my colors back, but with this lens on my camera the colors where amazing right from camera. It is a bit clunky when it focuses, but it is fast, and as long as it performs then I don't care about the clunky-ness of it. I can't wait to rent this lens again. It's an awesome value for the price!
I have 14 years documentary photography experience. I rented this lens for a Raiders game on the sidelines. This is a perfect fixed telephoto lens for sports. When applied to anything from a 20D up to a 60D which have sensors of 1.5x or more magnification, you essentially get a 450mm telephoto! The lens is very lightweight and compact as compared to a 400mm lens. On a tripod turn off the stabilizer. When using the lens hand held, turn it on. Yields razor sharp photos. I was very delighted with the results.
