BorrowLenses.com (Sohail's) Write-Up

While Canon has long had a 100mm Macro lens in its lineup, the new EF 100mm f/2.8L IS Macro is signigicantly ahead of its predecessor in build quality, features, and optics. The old non-L 100mm Macro is a superb lens in its own right, but the addition of a weather-sealed (with the appropriate camera body) construction, better optics, a 9-blade rounded iris for smooth, creamy, butter bokeh (background blur) and Canon’s new Hybrid IS make this lens one of the finest in its lineup. The Hybrid IS alone is an impressive additon; it adds up to 4 stops of image stabilization, producing acceptably sharp images at shutter speeds as low as 1/10 of a second. In addition, this is a true 1:1 macro lens, which means it can reproduce items at life-size magnification. The 100mm focal length also makes it an ideal portrait lens, something that the Image Stabilization goes a long way towards helping. All this and more give Canon shooters a worthy competitor to Nikon’s 105mm f/2.8G AF-S VR IF-ED Micro. This one lens rental you will want to keep booking over and over again.

Ben: Great macro lens! Sharp photos on the 7d. Would recommend to anyone wanting to try Or needing a lens for macro photography, I owned a macro lens before and it never got used so I sold it some time ago but recently I found myself with a macro itch and thank you Borrow Lenses for scratching that itch. Recommended!

Edwardo: This is one of my favorite go-to lenses on my Canon 60D and 7D. The IS in this lens is one of the best I have ever seen. I shoot a lot of video (mainly event videography) and this lens makes it possible to handhold without a rig for long periods of time, with no visible shake whatsoever. Vincent Laforet recommended this lens as a great video lens and I can see why he did. There is no need for a shoulder rig or tripod with this one, just put it on and shoot. The images are super sharp, focuses very easily, and is great for up close shots (especially with the crop factor) Enjoy it!

Toby: A truly fantastic lens! The sharpness, image quality and color rendering straight out of this lens is just wonderful. What is probably most amazing to me is the number of sharp macro images I took without even using a tripod, in fact for the first week of my two week rental I NEVER used a tripod. The IS is awesome. And it is not just an amazing Macro lens, an excellent portrait lens, so sweetly sharp even wide open that you end up with the softest bokeh, the type of bokeh you want to photoshop in to every portrait you ever take ;) So - Macro, portraits and an affordable alternative to the 70-200 f/2.8 IS. I feel like I am running out of adjectives for this lens so I will finish the review by letting you all know I have started a savings fund and hope to own this lens in the not so distant future.

Bob: I've always been interested in macro so this is what lead me to renting this lens. The IS is really awesome on this lens. You can't really tell the difference in the pictures I took without a tripod and the ones with a tripod. Very nice close focus, excellent color, sharpness and ease of use. I would definitely recommend this lens for anyone interested in macro work. It's not an inexpensive lens either, so Borrowlens.com really makes it affordable to shoot some of the higher end equipment!!
