The 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 DO IS USM lens is an ultra compact telephoto zoom lens that offers superior performance and incorporates Diffractive Optics (DO) and Image Stabilizing (IS) technology. The use of Diffraction Optics allows lenses to be designed so that they are shorter and lighter than comparable refractive optical systems. The lens' AF is super-fast and silent with a ring-type USM, focuses down to 4.6 feet, and features a new zoom lock button that keeps the lens safe and secure when not in use or used at the wide angle setting. A great lens for sports, portraiture, or wildlife.

Jeffrey: Just got back from 3 weeks in Africa with this lens on my Rebel T3 base. Delighted overall with how it worked and the pictures taken , especially given the light weight and compactness. The USM focus is extremely fast and silent which made for some good flying bird photos. After a lot of experimentation, I found that best focus results were either at the close-up range (70-100mm focal length) or at 200mm with f8. Nothing terribly wrong with full zoom (300mm) but expect some fuzziness around the edges which is frustrating with birds. Our tour group also had a Nikon user with the full kit of lenses and I was happily surprised with how my pictures compares.
