Chris: This seems like a great idea, but in practice, this lens makes a lot of compromises to get such an extreme range in a single lens. First, this thing is HEAVY. Be prepared to be quickly fatigued from holding it. The push pull mechanism is awkward to use and will flop around unless tightened—the in practical use, the tension ring really works better as a lock/unlock than an adjustment with gradations. Doing a smooth zoom for video with EF lenses has always been a challenge, it's near impossible with this setup. The quality of the optics isn't super either; my impression was that the image got soft at the long end. I'd recommend this lens if operating from a tripod or monopod and absolutely need the range without swapping lenses. If you can swap between a 24-70 (I really like the new Tamron VC (aka IS) version) and the wonderful Canon 70-300, do that instead.
