Description
This venerable wide-angle prime lens provides sharpness and impressive performance at all settings. Its large maximum aperture of f/1.4 allows for superb low-light photographs, and its circular aperture and narrow depth of field provide pleasing background blur. It is the ideal tool for photojournalists, landscape and event photographers, and anyone who enjoys taking images from a wider perspective. This Mark II version improves greatly over its predecessor with the addition of two high-precision aspheric lenses, which correct aberration including curvature of field and distortion. Chromatic aberration common in wide-angle shooting is also reduced by the inclusion of two UD lenses, which ensure optimum image quality and corner-to-corner detail.

BRANDEN: I rented one of these several months ago for some landscape shots. At the time, I wasn't overly impressed with the performance over less expensive 24mm options. The next day, before the rental was due back, I brought it with me to a dinner party just because I had it. Skip forward a month, and I was reviewing the photos, and I realized something -- the photos from the dinner party had an amazing "feel" to them, regarding clarity, color, and blur quality. So I tried this lens out again, this time specifically for events, and now I'm addicted. The photos are amazing, head and feet above what the cheaper mid-20 lenses I've tried can do. This lens is completely usable at f/1.4 -- and this alone has made this lens a staple of my event photography. The upshot is, while there are better options for landscape photos, this lens is the king of event photography.

Jean: WOW...and double WOW. I love this lens. I rented it for my trip to Yosemite--hoping that I would be able to get the stars at night. I'm a novice photographer and have been wanting to photograph the night sky for some time. I was able to get incredible photos with this lens. Will definitely be renting this one again!

Chad: I rented this for portraits on my 7d, and it produced some of the most unique pictures I've seen. The shallow DOF with the wide angle, combined with the stunning sharpness and colors found in L glass makes this a winner. Try it out, you have nothing to lose.

Jarama: When you start to review the first shots you take with this lens, there may be some initial disappointment, especially if you are shooting wide open. "These aren't that sharp". But then you'll come across a shot where you nail the focus and it takes your breath away. Then you understand why this lens exists. I believe an overwhelming majority of the "soft" photos wide open are due to the challenge of focusing with such a narrow depth of field, rather than any inherent shortcomings of the lens. Yes, it is sharper stopped down in the 2.8 range, but the wide open shots are still fantastic, provided you nail the focus. If you are ready for the challenge of shooting at 1.4, this lens will reward you with amazing images...
