Description

The Nikon D800 blasts away the competition delivering more image resolution than any other DSLR on the market. Packing in an astounding 36.3 megapixels into a compact, lightweight body, this full-frame camera (with DX shooting option)delivers amazing dynamic range and superb detail.

Using a newly developed CMOS sensor, the D800 delivers exceptional depth and detail. Standard ISO range is 100 to 6400, expandable to ISO 50 to 25600. Higher ISO range gives the photographer/cinematographer flexibility to open an image up to new visual opportunities.

The D800 has an optical low-pass filter that reduces false color and moire. As an alternative, Nikon has introduced the D800E as well which removes the optical filter when sharper images are needed (*Note that the removal of the optical filter produces sharper images, but increases the possibility of false color and moire).

For filmmakers, Nikon is finally entering the video arena with a full range of HD features. The D800 captures full HD with 1080p at 30p. The camera also includes a flicker reduction option, high-fidelity audio input, live view output to external monitors (with a second live view option tailored for photographers) and recording uncompressed video via HDMI (1280x720). Time lapse photography can be played-back and saved as a movie file.

Phillip: Great customer service, communication was precise about when the camera was available and when it was shipped. The Nikon D800 camera was the best I could ask for, as far as extreme 36.3 megapixels, I couldn't believe how detailed the photos were. It made up my mind on purchasing a new Nikon camera. I loved that you could use the higher resolution setting (ISO) for shooting in darker gyms (I shoot sports) and the photos had no grain as high as 12,800 ISO. It gave me the benefit of shooting at 1/2000 @ f/2.8, when my old Nikon had terrible grain at 1/400 @ f/2.8. Photos were amazing. I can see this camera taking the place of medium format cameras in studio settings.

Corey: Borrow Lenses customer service is the absolute best! The Nikon D800 is quite simply the best dslr ever produced. The noise performance is unmatched for its resolution size! I rented this D800 because ever since it was released I wanted to see how it performed and if it was able to live up to the paper specs. It does!! This camera is a MUST HAVE for anyone! The burst of 4 frames sounds slow, but you get 6 with a battery grip and while shooting it seems like its enough for me. I conducted a low light and high iso test between the Canon 7D and the D800. Chris: I have my trusty reliable D200 that I've been using since 2006, and I love it. I am however starting to outgrow it, and I thought I'd try out the D800 without paying the full price of entry to have a better idea of what I like and what it available in the marketplace in terms of performance. At first the interface is a bit confusing - it's put together better, and the highlight preview was disconcerting at first, but in terms of helping me take better pictures, after only a few hours of using it I was definitely reconsidering my desire to turn it off. It performed well with my PocketWizards and SB800. I only had DX lenses to use so was afflicted with cropping, which took me a while to get used to - something Nikon has addressed by having a DX sensor crop frame in the viewfinder. I was unable to get the full 36MP out of this camera during my time with it, but it's high-ISO/low-noise performance compared to my older D200 was STUNNING. The addition of video and live-view is just a bonus in my opinion - I can't wait to get one full-time. If you're using a D50/D200 or similar platform, you won't be disappointed with the performance of this camera - just spend a bit of time with the manual.
