Curiouser: It's a good product if you need both a monitor and recorder, but it's got its fair share of quirks. We own one of these for use with a Nikon D800, but for 2 camera shoots we've rented this. So the good: The Ninja records ProRes HQ, 422 and LT to either SSD or HDD. Aside from that, you have some cool monitoring functions to aid in exposure and focusing (not pixel-to-pixel punch in though). You also get playback of recorded clips on the device for what it's worth. We used the Ninja with HDD and for the most part, it produces quality recordings. It has a few timecode options, you can flip the unit so your cables come from either your right or left and other handy things. Onto the bad: When paired with the D800, it somehow misinterprets a 1080p23.98 for a 1080psf23.98 resulting in a flickered signal that does get recorded. Although this problem was supposed to be fixed in the most recent firmware update, we experienced this problem. After much frustration, there seems to be a quick temporary fix if this happens to you. Just flip the live view switch from video to photo, wait a few seconds and flip it back to video. Also, not sure exactly why, but we ended up with about twice as many clips as were intended to be recorded. Not that anything was corrupt or missing, that'd be atrocious, but that there were a hundred or so extra clips of 1 frame each. Then there is the screen which is fairly unresponsive, on purpose I hear, but our camera ops were frustrated nonetheless. This combined with our use of HDD may have something to do with our extra 1 frame clips. Lastly, the battery charger that comes with this unit is terrifically slow. It is a dual battery dock, but it takes all night to charge the batteries that ship with the unit. Make sure you request the batteries to be charged before shipment. There are more good things I'm missing, but I've probably listed all the bad. I'd still recommend it for a D800 shoot, our camera ops liked having a second monitor for focus/exposure and I love having the higher quality recordings. Just beware of the troubleshooting that may be required and give yourself some time.
