Description The Nikon D800E packs all the punch of the D800 with just one change that appeals to landscape, wildlife, architecture, and product photographers: the removal of the optical low-pass filter. The optical low-pass filter is a feature of almost all DSLRs. It sits in front of the image sensor and reduces false color and moire (interference patterns) by effectively blurring very fine resolution. This blurring is almost imperceptible but can be an issue for photographers working with sharpness-dependent subjects. This is where the D800E is preferable to the D800, especially for those working in RAW (JPEG shooters will see an increase in moire patterns that can be cumbersome to fix post-production). Images from the D800E will show increased sharpness when combined, especially, with high-quality glass in optimal shooting conditions. The extra boost in sharpness is also beneficial for large-scale printing or making extreme crops and, at 36.3mp, the D800E is the closest thing to medium format image quality inside the lightweight and afforable packaging of a DSLR.
