Description
The original Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR is generally regarded as a fantastic piece of glass, but it has just one problem -- it vignettes on full-frame sensor bodies like the D700 and D3. Nikon has remedied this issue with the new VR II version you see here, and also added an improved Vibration Reduction system that bumps up the number of stops that you can handhold the lens from three to four stops. One other big change is the snazzy gold N badge on the barrel; it signifies Nikon has applied its top-secret Nano Crystal Coating to help control ghosting and flare.

Optics aside it's a phenomenal zoom and part of the Nikon holy trinity that also includes the 14-24mm f/2.8G and the 24-70mm f/2.8G. If you're shooting on a crop sensor body such as the D90 or D300 the VR1 version of this lens will suit your needs just fine. If you're living in the full-frame world though, as soon as you attach this lens to your camera body and rotate it into position you will hear angels sing.

Jennifer: I've rented this lens three times in the past year, and twice this summer -- I was light on weddings and couldn't justify purchasing it while I could rent it -- and both times it was great! I will definitely be renting it till I can afford to just have it, but in the meantime, this is a fabulous resource. I will note that the first time I rented it this summer, it didn't come in a carrying case, and it was a stretch to work it into my Shootsac + smaller bag set-up and feel like it was adequately protected. The second time, it had it's own case though, and everything was great!

Jessica: I first heard about this lens during this years WPPI while hearing wedding photographer Susan Stripling speak. It's her favorite go-to lens and has allowed her to create a very particular style within her work. The lens can be used from a rear church balcony to catch the most minute details, or in outdoor portraits to pull the background in as a creamy backdrop. Great lens.

Adam : I've used this lens on several different occasions, once for a wedding and two different times shooting pro wakeboarding. It's big and heavy, but totally worth it. The quality glass helps produce astounding images, with a very specific style. It also gives a large amount of creative control with its large f/2.8 aperture, as well as being able to get far away from your subjects and isolating them against the background. Probably one of the best lenses I've used.

Andrew: I rented this lens for a weekend of football. One high school day game and the Steelers vs Patriots game which I had a sideline pass for. I'm just getting into the higher end equipment of the sports photography world and I have to say, I do believe I fell in love with this lens. A focusing issue at first, but I realized it was the cameras setting, not the lenses fault. It gave me amazingly sharp images. This is a must for sports photography. I can't wait til I get to rent it again for baseball season and when I finally save enough to buy it. Ordering process was fast and simple.
