Description
If this lens was a movie, it'd be that one with Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson -- As Good As it Gets. This is just a stunningly good piece of glass that delivers razor sharp images at any aperture, even wide-open on an FX sensor. It uses Nikon's top-secret Nano Crystal Coating to help control flare and ghosting, and has two extra low dispersion elements inside as well (hence the letters ED in its title). Like any lens designed for professional use it has silent, fast auto-focus and an extremely solid build. It's big, and it's heavy, but its tack sharp and easily one of the best lenses Nikon -- or any manufacturer for that matter -- has ever produced.

Nicholas: Good lens, but there are better choices for DX. The lens size is too much; the Nikon 17-55 2.8 has better coverage for DX shooters in a smaller package and the sharpness doesn't quite compete at wider apertures. This is a decent back-up choice to the 17-55. For FX shooters this lens has its place, but haven't seen the resultant images to judge sharpness.

Amanda : THE BEST mid-range zoom lens for Nikon! This lens is AMAZING! I was shocked by how much more vibrant the colors were from this lens vs. any of my other lenses. We used it for shooting a wedding and the focal length was perfect! Allowed us to use this lens for most of our shots. 2.8 allowed us to get great shots in a very low lit church during the ceremony with minimal noise. Lens stayed sharp through all focal lengths...can't say enough good things about this lens. Will be a repeat rental for us for sure! (until we can afford to purchase). The only small downfall is I was a little surprised by how heavy the lens was. But we got used to it very quickly and the superior image quality was well worth the extra weight! HIGHLY recommend this lens!

Christina : This lens was the best lens I could have used for a wedding gig. I thoroughly enjoyed the low aperture in low light situations, and the sharpness and clarity of the lens. This was a very versatile lens, and it is a must have in your camera bag.

Kabir: I rented this lens to take with me as a main on a trip to Peru. I hiked the Inca trail for 5 days, and wanted something with spectacular sharpness and quality. The lens delivered with astounding speed, sharpness, and little chromatic aberration. Attached to my D700, fellow hikers named my outfit "the Bazooka". It's big, but if you won't settle for less than supreme quality, and don't have a lot of down time to swap out primes, this lens is unbeatable.

Jessica: I rented this lens in the beginnings of starting my photography business. This lens is hardy, versatile with light, and the zoom ability makes it appropriate for portrait sessions and weddings alike. The images are crisp and clear and the focusing capabilities are fast. It's also a great starter lens that can be used on even the pro-sumer starter bodies (D40/D40x). I ended up loving the lens so much I bought it a few months later.

iandroo888: One of the best mid-range zoom's I have ever used. Top build quality, and fast. I've used this lens in a few events before, mainly weddings. Sharp and fast outdoors. Great indoors due to the f/2.8 aperture while giving a nice creamy bokeh while keeping focused nice and sharp. I've always used this lens on a Nikon D5000 so it gives a little front heavy effect due to the D5000 being a semi-starter DSLR body. With this lens being a 24-70mm f/2.8, effective focal length of 36-105 on this crop body, it was definitely the lens to use for a wedding. I have used this lens in two weddings, one inside a church, with a decent amount of light from the windows but still kind of dark, as well as a shaded area at the Bellagio Casino & Hotel. Bump up the ISO to 800 and worked fast and nicely even indoors while waiting for "our turn" for the ceremony. The long lens hood prevented a lot of lens flare from the sun, the sturdy build and smooth zoom rings made this a lens to LOVE. In post-processing, very little distortion needed to be corrected. Even at ISO 800, there was very minimal grain produced in the pictures, due to the higher shutter speed i was able to achieve from the f/2.8 aperture of this lens.

Rich: There's an old joke... You wanna know why a divorce is so expensive?? Because it's WORTH it!!! Well, that joke applies to the Nikon 24-70. A good friend of mine (and great photographer) John has a studio in Austin Texas. We did a shoot together with a great model. John was shooting with his 24-70, and told me that it's his favorite lens. He knew that I shoot a lot of weddings, and mentioned that this lens is the most popular lens among wedding photographers. Well... I decided to give it a test drive. I had two weddings in one weekend, and thought that would be perfect. I literally shot the entire wedding with just this lens. I have never had a lens that auto-focused so FAST and so sharp. I would bring up my camera and BAM, it was focused. I kept it wide open most of the time, taking advantage of that gorgeous depth of field. The images came out incredibly creamy smooth bokeh. It is now my mission in life to buy this lens. I'm even selling my little commuter car to finance it. Other observations: This lens just LOOKS like it means business. It's huge. On the negative side,... it's also very heavy... but that's understandable. It's packing a lot of glass. Very rugged construction. I use a Black Rapid sling, so the weight didn't bother me... but if I'd had this around my neck, or just carrying it all the time, it would have gotten tedious. If you have a serious assignment (wedding or photo shoot) and you need a serious lens, this is the one to rent or buy. It's WORTH it.

Sean: I do street photography with a D700 and this lens is a very versatile and a well performer. Good for landscape and portraits but is kinda heavy and large for a walk around lens.

Amy: I wanted to try this lens out for mid-range option and back to my favorite portrait lens (85mm f/1.4G AF-S Nikkor). Loved it! Great wider-angle for shots I couldn't get with the other. Loved that it opened to f/2.8 at that wide angle. Highly suggest this lens and will probably purchase this as an everyday all-around usage lens.

Susan: This lens is incredible. I used it to shoot a wedding on a cruise. I thought it would be the perfect "indoor" lens..but after the first afternoon I never took it off. Close ups and portraits were incredible only to be outdone by the beautiful scenic shots from the island. In every light and every time of day or night. If you have to take one lens this should be it.

Eric: I use this lens as the 'special sauce' for my D300, usually when traveling or shooting concerts. Although my camera is a 5 year old DX format body, swapping to this lens always gives my photos a little something something extra. Ditto on what everyone else has said, this is a phenomenal piece of hardware.

Jen: This lens is an absolute dream! A little heavy, but provides sharp images, accurate color reproduction and fast focus. I rented it as a backup for a wedding, and ended up using it for the entire event. Yeah, it's that good!

Mandie: Words cannot describe how much I love this lens. I recently made the switch from Canon to Nikon. I had been using a 24-70 Tamron lens on my Canon (http://bit.ly/JBHZmU) because the Canon glass I rented didn't seem to have the punch I expected. But naturally, when I switched to Nikon, I had to try out the famous Nikon glass. I was not disappointed. Quick focusing, even in dim lighting (which is my primary shooting environment - I shoot births), sharp as a tack, gorgeous bokeh, and just all around a great piece of equipment. It has a nice heft to it, but isn't oppressively heavy - a great "walking around" lens, and fabulous for birthing suites, where I have to move quickly and capture a variety of focal length shots. I'd like to try out the Sigma lens (http://bit.ly/WRcohQ), just for posterity, but I don't think I'll be able to bring myself to try it when this one is working so nicely.

Josie: This lens never left my camera until the day I had to return it. I kept extending my rental because I loved it so much. It is very sharp! I could see an amazing difference in the quality of images with this awesome lens. Even wide open it was great. I loved the feel of it, and look on my D90. I will buying this lens for sure.
