I had never used this kit (or any other Profoto kit) before the D1 Air this week. This system is incredibly easy to setup and use. The transceiver is very functional...you can control up to six groups individually or all of them as a master group. That includes control over the modeling light and powering the lights down as well. One negative is the transceiver feels a little bit flimsy on the top of the camera. Instead of firmly mounting in the hot shoe, it can flex back and forth more than I am comfortable with. It had no effect on it's performance, and I'm being pretty nitpicky here. I just like things to be solidly in place. As for performance, all I can say is these lights are beautiful. The quality of the light is stunning and exactly the same every time. I shot glass and mirrored tile installations for three straight days and the never misfired once and the color temp was perfect every time. Having 1/10 stop control over the power was really great too. The kit comes with two white umbrellas so you might need to augment with other light shaping tools depending on what you are shooting. It comes in a very compact case as well as DVDs with user guides for the lights and the transceiver. There is also the Profoto software for managing the lights from your MAC or PC. Basically, this kit is a no brainer to setup and get dialed in and produces amazing light quality. I had it for a week, and it is a bargain at $140.

The Profoto D1 Air 500Ws 2-Monolight Studio Kit with Remote (90-120V & 200-240V) gives you a total of 1000Ws of Profoto digital lighting power, with color temperature and exposure consistency across the entire 7 f-stop power range. This kit also includes 2 light stands, 2 umbrellas, a 1/8th to pc sync cord and a studio kit case for storage and transport.
A built-in reflector controls stray light from the flash head, and it's designed for use with other reflectors, softboxes and umbrellas. Easy-to-use controls help you take advantage of the D1's fast recycling time (0.95 seconds @ full power), short flash duration (1/1000 to 1/2600 sec. @ t0.5) and 1/10 f-stop precision exposure control. The Air Remote Control is included for full wireless control of the entire kit.
This Profoto D1 kit is an excellent choice for any photographer needing portable lighting that's easy to transport, set up, and use. I've rented this kit from Borrow Lenses at least 8 times and it's never failed to help me produce quality photos while traveling all across the U.S. Even if you've never used Profoto or similar strobes, you'll find this kit very easy and intuitive – if you can plug in a power cord and have a basic knowledge of lighting you'll be up and running in just a few minutes. Mastering lighting techniques, of course, takes a while longer... Aside from the quality construction Profoto is famous for, the controls on the back of each head are intuitive. With a quick turn of the you can adjust the output of each strobe by 1/10 stop. The strobes can be triggered using the included Air Remote, another flash (slave), a Pocketwizard, or with a sync cord, and the built-in modeling light can be turned on or off, and in either prop or free mode (On Prop the strength of the model light depends on the power setting of the strobe, while on free the strength of the model light is set by the Model Set button on the bottom right, which you press and then turn the middle dial to your desired setting.) After firing, the heads will let you know when they're ready to fire again by dimming the modeling lights and/or a beep sound (switchable). The lights, stands, power cords, Air Remote, umbrellas, and manual/DVD all come in an easy to handle case. Borrow Lenses will ship this to you inside a heavily padded cardboard box, and while the case itself is durable, it will not protect the strobes adequately by itself as checked baggage or shipping (but is great for carrying in the car). If traveling, you're best off having BL ship the lights to your shoot location. Whether you're a pro or first-time user, you'll love the gorgeous Profoto light quality and consistency from shot to shot. Rent it. You'll like it.
