TL;DR Version If you don't need video or extreme weather sealing, this is quite possibly the only digital camera you will ever need. And yes the rumors are true: It's a workhorse that will refuse to quit long after you are grovelling on the ground because you just can't take another photo. Clean up to 6400 depending on how big of a noise ninja you are. Rock solid AF that can pick up focus on things that even you can't see. 8 FPS when paired with the battery grip. Well balanced ergonomics make shooting a pleasure. Built in TTL Commander Powerful AF Motor lets you give Nikon's Legacy Glass a second lease on life and spare your wallet from the B&H/Adorama chopping block. Sadly, Nikon no longer manufactures this camera but there is a very healthy used market where you can buy one for around the $1,500 mark in good/excellent condition. Could you get a D600 for that? Absolutely, but its a totally different animal. For what it's worth I used both and chose the D700 over the D600. It was just that good to me. To each his own I suppose :)
