Description
The original Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G AF-S VR is generally regarded as a fantastic piece of glass, but it has just one problem -- it vignettes on full-frame sensor bodies like the D700 and D3. Nikon has remedied this issue with the new VR II version you see here, and also added an improved Vibration Reduction system that bumps up the number of stops that you can handhold the lens from three to four stops. One other big change is the snazzy gold N badge on the barrel; it signifies Nikon has applied its top-secret Nano Crystal Coating to help control ghosting and flare.

Optics aside it's a phenomenal zoom and part of the Nikon holy trinity that also includes the 14-24mm f/2.8G and the 24-70mm f/2.8G. If you're shooting on a crop sensor body such as the D90 or D300 the VR1 version of this lens will suit your needs just fine. If you're living in the full-frame world though, as soon as you attach this lens to your camera body and rotate it into position you will hear angels sing.

Jennifer: I've rented this lens three times in the past year, and twice this summer -- I was light on weddings and couldn't justify purchasing it while I could rent it -- and both times it was great! I will definitely be renting it till I can afford to just have it, but in the meantime, this is a fabulous resource. I will note that the first time I rented it this summer, it didn't come in a carrying case, and it was a stretch to work it into my Shootsac + smaller bag set-up and feel like it was adequately protected. The second time, it had it's own case though, and everything was great!

Jessica: I first heard about this lens during this years WPPI while hearing wedding photographer Susan Stripling speak. It's her favorite go-to lens and has allowed her to create a very particular style within her work. The lens can be used from a rear church balcony to catch the most minute details, or in outdoor portraits to pull the background in as a creamy backdrop. Great lens.

Chris: I am going to keep this short and sweet. This is a spectacular lens. I rented it for a wedding I shot last week and I loved it. (I shoot d7000) While I did not use it the whole time, when I did I got superb shots. Focus is spot on, background is blown out is spectacular form, and the reach on my DX body is just what I needed for the wedding as I had to stay far back. I will rent this for every wedding from this point forward. Some cons are it is heavy, so just be prepared for that. A monopod is a good call for some instances as a result.

Taggart: To paraphrase a television character, this lens is "legend-WAIT FOR IT-dary!" It is a remarkable lens. I rented it to cover a corporate event that included both a golf scramble ("tournament" is too serious of a word to describe the golfing that happened) and day's worth of speakers and presentations in a typically poorly-lit conference center. I expected to use a longer reach 70-300 to cover the golf, and a shorter 17-55 for the speakers, but I found the 70-200 perfect for both. The wide aperture allowed me to get nicely blurred backgrounds to really make the golfers stand out. Indoors I was able to get nicely framed head shots of speakers without having to be right in their faces. The auto-focus on this lens is amazingly fast. The sharpness is incredible. The only drawback is the weight, but that is to be expected with a professional level lens such as this one. I shall be renting this lens again, and I have hopes of one day acquiring one.

Keiko: I have rented this lense twice now, both times using it with my Nikon D5100. It has worked like a charm! I use it to photograph my daughter's dance recital. Low light, changing on stage colors due to different costumes and lighting and not being able to use a flash make this a challenge. But thanks to this lense, the results are amazing. All of my pictures come out like true professional shots! I set my Nikon to 1600 ISO and photograph at a speed of 200 and every picture is amazing! No noise and no blurr, just sharp action shots with amazing color quality! I truly wish I would have known about BorrowLenses and this lense in particular years ago, I woud probaby have bought it by now. The only reason I am not buying this lense, s that my daughter is graduating next year and I don't think I will have too many reasons to use this amazing lense after that.

Adam : I've used this lens on several different occasions, once for a wedding and two different times shooting pro wakeboarding. It's big and heavy, but totally worth it. The quality glass helps produce astounding images, with a very specific style. It also gives a large amount of creative control with its large f/2.8 aperture, as well as being able to get far away from your subjects and isolating them against the background. Probably one of the best lenses I've used.

Bandon : Absolutely amazing lens, I couldn't stop using the lens, I shot two football gameand the pictures came out like no other. Will definitely rent this lens again.

Andrew: I rented this lens for a weekend of football. One high school day game and the Steelers vs Patriots game which I had a sideline pass for. I'm just getting into the higher end equipment of the sports photography world and I have to say, I do believe I fell in love with this lens. A focusing issue at first, but I realized it was the cameras setting, not the lenses fault. It gave me amazingly sharp images. This is a must for sports photography. I can't wait til I get to rent it again for baseball season and when I finally save enough to buy it. Ordering process was fast and simple.

Jon: I rented this lens, along with a 2x teleconverter, for the inaugural US Formula 1 Grand Prix in Austin. I mounted it on my D5100, and the results were great. I had always been curious what sort of a difference pro-level gear would make, and after renting one of these I'm sold, and saving up for one of my own. I had expected the great clarity that it gives, but what really caught me unawares was the speed of focusing. I had never thought of my consumer-grade kit lens and Tamron 18-270 as particularly sluggish, but the 70-200 f/2.8 focuses in an instant! I was able to track F1 cars as they approached, passed, and went away, with the lens accurately tracking focus the whole way. One thing I was glad I had was a monopod. While not huge, this thing does get a little heavy after a full day at the track,so the extra support definitely came in handy.

Torvic : If you're looking for a lens that can provide you great extended range without sacrificing your ability to capture moving subjects, then this is it. The constant 2.8 throughout the entire range is what sold me on this lens. I needed to be able to capture pictures of a moving subject from a distance in a low light situation and that's exactly what it did. The build quality is top notch but you'll definitely get a workout with this glass if you plan on having it on your person for an extended period of time, but it's worth it. The focus is spot on and fast. It is worth noting that for DX crop sensor camera's the range of this lens is effectively 105-300mm. Again, a great lens for situations that demand the ability to capture subjects from afar and in low light.
