This was my first lens rental... I had never used a lens like this before and I learned A LOT. After a lot of thought and going through my pictures, I think I MIGHT rent this lens again. However, if I can afford it, I will choose a similar lens that is faster. Things to consider: 1. You really need a solid tripod - this lens cannot be held by hand. In fact, it was still very hard to use with my light tripod. 2. If you are new to using this type of lens - PRACTICE and make sure you get the pics off your camera and look closely at them. PROS: 1. Inexpensive - this is a great lens to get your feet wet on a long L-series lens. 2. If used correctly you can get excellent pictures. CONS: 1. It's very heavy. 2. It's unforgiving. If your mount is not very secure you won't get a clear shot.

I thoroughly enjoyed this lens. So much so, I extended my rental period. It focused quickly for the most part and yielded clear, sharp images. I was sorry to return it. I used it with either a monopod or tripod, though I think it possible to handhold if you're very good with that. The only drawback I found was the inability to zoom out to find the bird who flew out of view. (which is obvious being it's not a zoom lens-but something you want to consider depending on what you will be shooting). If you're photographing things you know will be far away, this lens is a good choice and one I will probably be renting again. And, Borrow Lenses is great!
