Canon's Reputation as a Pivotal Player in Independent Filmmaking & Professional Photography

Canon has long been the number 1 brand both in the industry at large and at BorrowLenses. Challenged only by Sony in recent years, Canon dominates both in lens selection and cutting-edge camera features. They're also the earliest innovators of DSLR filmmaking, putting narrative and documentary projects within reach for everyday people. A go-to for wedding, portrait, and commercial photographers, Canon is considered probably the most dependable brand in the prosumer market.

Canon Continues to Innovate with a New Mirrorless System

Starting in the fall of 2018, Canon began rolling out their next generation of cameras: the EOS R system. With a revolutionary new mount with a 12-pin connection between the mount and the new RF lenses, Canon was able to unlock amazing communication speeds allowing for split-second shots thanks to optimized data transfers.

Another feature of this new mount system is its physical size. The dimensions of the Canon RF mount is 54mm, as opposed to the 44mm diameter of the EF mount system. In the DSLR years, Canon had to leave space for the reflex mirror mechanism. But with the new mirrorless form factor, this opened up a lot of options and Canon's first step was to engineer larger diameter, rear-positioned elements. This reduced light bends, thus reducing aberrations, and overall image quality was improved. Lenses could also be manufactured smaller and lighter than their EF counterparts.

Top Canon Cameras and Their Benefits

Now with a dozen EOS R cameras to choose from, knowing which is right for you can be daunting. Fortunately, renting is a great, affordable way to test multiple cameras side-by-side. But to narrow down the field, here are our favorites:

Canon EOS C70

Enjoy exceptional cinema capabilities but in a familiar, compact form factor. This is a Super 35mm 4K camera with built-in ND filters, mini-XLR ports, timecode, electronic stabilization, a fully-rotating touchscreen, and an amazing 16+ stops of dynamic range which can be controlled with Canon Log 2 or Log 3 Gamma. Add a mic to the ergonomic grip and attach one of Canon's incredibly sharp new RF lenses and you're set to go!

Canon EOS R5 C

Positioned as a kind of best-of-both-worlds choice between the C70 and the EOS R5. This camera offers a lot of the advanced features of the C70 but is even more portable thanks to the R5-style build. With the R5 C, you get a 45MP full frame sensor, making this a powerful hybrid camera for videographers and photographers. It records DCI 8K (raw out with the Ninja V+) and offers a built-in workflow for Canon VR when paired with the 5.2mm f/2.8L Dual Fisheye, which is only fully compatible with a few cameras – this being one of them.

Canon C300 Mark III

RF mount is the future of Canon but that doesn't mean EF mount doesn't still have a firm position in the industry. While the RF lens selection continues to grow, there is still a way larger selection of EF mount lenses to choose from. The C-series EF mount cinema cameras have long been depended on for their customizable design, lightweight bodies, and full suite of ports. This one records 4K raw, has anamorphic lens support, built-in NDs, and a large 4.3" touchscreen.

Best Canon Lenses to Rent

Many folks own the camera they want but it's quite difficult to own every lens you want. What's more, you don't always need certain lengths – but sometimes only a certain kind of lens will do. This is where renting is definitely advantageous. Whether it's for that once-a-year air show or a local filmmaking competition, BL has a lens perfect for your next long-weekend project.

Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM Z

The 24-105mm range has long been one of the most practical choices for everyday shooting and for events. Finally available in RF mount, this mid-range zoom offers image stabilization, a clickless iris ring for video (as well as reduced focus breathing), and a fast maximum aperture that's constant throughout the zoom range.

Canon RF 100-300mm f/2.8L IS

Also an RF mount, this lens is a well-rounded sports/wildlife lens with image stabilization, fast aperture, and is under 6 lbs! It is equipped with an internal focusing design so that the length does not change when zooming. It offers intuitive handling and weather sealing.

By the way, if you have an EF mount camera and want to try an RF mount lens, there are adapters that allow you to pair the two!

Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L

This is a unique lens that's part of Canon's EF mount tilt shift collection. Tilt shifts are special purpose lenses that allows you to tilt and to shift the lens in a way that mimics the movements of large format bellows systems. You can also just use the lens "straight" for a high quality ultrawide that's awesome for landscapes and nightscapes.
