Cool Stuff – Week of September 1, 2012

Cool Stuff

Welcome to Cool Stuff, a weekly feature where we post our favorite links from the past week, including our favorite articles and how-tos, videos, images and more.

  • We begin this week with this riveting and powerful video on the impact of the world’s most powerful videos. There’s a lot missing from this video, but I think we’ll all agree there’s something to be said for the core message here.
  • Black and white photographers are almost fanatical about their art and craft. Here’s a pretty cool video (in B&W, natch!) that might help explain why.
  • The next vid comes to us from our friends at PetaPixel – have YOU heard of Flam Wenders?
  • Let’s face it, we’re a gear company. And as a gear company, we salivate over new stuff just like everyone else. So we’re stoked to see two new cameras from Canon, the C500 4K video beast, and the original C300′s little sibling, the C100.
  • And finally, because we must – the Leica 1600mm f/5.6. Cost: just over $2 million. Erm, no. We will NOT be carrying this lens for rent.

And now, for the BorrowLenses.com rundown!

That’s it for this week’s Cool Stuff. As always, questions and feedback are welcome in the comments below.

The Internet is Awesome

Cool Stuff

Google’s Marissa Mayer was recently hired on to helm Yahoo! as their CEO, and photographers who care immensely about Yahoo!’s beleaguered Flickr photo service decided to send her a message.

The folks at Yahoo! responded with a kind of “Help us help you” message, and posted the following:

Though it isn’t exactly what some folks would have liked, it is nice to see that Yahoo has their ear to the ground and is actually listening to what their users and critics have to say.

In recent times, they’ve been facing competition from multiple quarters. Google+, 500px, and even Facebook have improved their photo sharing features. One wonders if the wonderful community that exists on Flickr will eventually fall by the wayside. As fans of the service (and longtime users), we hope Marissa Mayer does, in fact, make Flick awesome again.

Zack Arias on DigitalRev

Cool Stuff

Just a quick “You gotta see this” post for you today. The folks at DigitalRev.com had Zack Arias on their show last week. Zack, who is visiting Hong Kong for a workshop with Joe McNally, appeared on the show that he calls the Top Gear of photography.

DigitalRev does a segment called “Pro Photographer, Cheap Camera,” which last featured Chase Jarvis. Now, Zack makes an appearance, shooting with a Kodak C142. The result? Sheer awesomeness.

On the Profoto Blog

Cool Stuff

Our recent Tip of the Week was picked up by the wonderful folks at Profoto and mentioned on their blog. If you haven’t been by there, you’re missing out – they post a ton of great stuff that’s worth looking at even if you never use a single piece of Profoto gear. We warn you though – watching some of their videos will induce a pretty severe case of Profoto lust.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you…

Visit Profoto’s blog at profoto.com/blog, and check out their mention of our piece here.

Meet BorrowLenses.com : Monica Pease

BL News Cool Stuff
At BorrowLenses.com we have some incredible people behind the scenes that help make us the best online camera and lens rental service. This post is the third of a series to introduce you to members of the BorrowLenses.com team who tap into their passion for photography, videography and the arts daily in an effort to provide you the best service possible. Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica, our Inventory Manager.

What’s your role here at BorrowLenses.com?
I am the Inventory Manager.

Are you also a photographer and if so what is your expertise?
I am not a “real” photographer like most of the other people here but I am the official photog for my family. I am very mechanically-minded so what I really enjoy about photography is understanding how the camera works and how aperture, shutter speed, film speed, etc, all affect each other and the resulting exposure. I also love teaching others how to go beyond auto mode on their own cameras.

Can you briefly describe what the inventory team does?
We are the guardians of the gear! But really, we count it, receive it, pull it for orders…basically, we’re here to make sure nothing gets lost!

How many photography/video platforms do we support? (camera brands, accessories, etc.)
If we’re talking just cameras, 9–Canon, Nikon, Red, Sony, Leica, Fujifilm, Pentax, Olympus, and Lumix. But we carry many, many more brands in accessories and other gear from Sennheiser Mics and White Lightnings all the way down to Lowepro bags and SanDisk memory cards.

What is your role in ensuring customers have the best selection of gear to choose from?
In addition to ensuring that the existing inventory is accurate and available to rent, I also work very closely with our buyer to stock up on hot items and considering new gear.

What is one thing would you like BorrowLenses.com customers to know about Inventory that perhaps they might not know?
First, we have a lot of really fun stuff so explore the site! Second, please leave the barcode stickers attached…they are critical to my team and me! :-)
